The Mount Sinai Department of Neurology

The Estelle and Daniel Maggin Department of Neurology at The Mount Sinai Hospital is the oldest neurology department in the United States. Our inpatient neurology service opened in 1900 under the direction of Dr. Bernard Sachs, known for describing Tay-Sachs disease, and was the nation's first independent neurology service. Since then, the Department of Neurology has played a significant role in neurological research and treatment.

The department's strengths span individualized patient care, including care centers of national prominence, and strong research leadership in neuroscience that is internationally recognized. The unique blend of individualized patient care and cutting-edge research is instrumental in the department's pursuit of improving outcomes in the treatment of Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis (MS), stroke, and other neurological disorders.

Comprising several of the nation's top programs in research and patient care, the department is led by some of the most prominent figures in American neurology and receives annual research grants totaling more than $30 million.

Robert and John M. Bendheim Parkinson and Movement Disorders Center One of the world's leading multidisciplinary centers for the study of Parkinson's disease and related disorders, the Robert and John M. Bendheim Parkinson and Movement Disorders Center serves as a forum for collaboration among internationally acclaimed neuroscientists. The Center offers state-of-the-art clinical care, translational research, and basic science programs aimed at discovering cures for Parkinson's, dystonia, and other movement disorders. The Center employs deep brain stimulation (DBS) in one of the largest such programs in the country. The Center also plays a major role in evaluating cell-based and gene therapies for the treatment of movement disorders.

Corinne Goldsmith Dickinson Center for Multiple Sclerosis This internationally recognized treatment and research center unites the multidisciplinary efforts of leading physicians and scientists in understanding the causes and consequences of multiple sclerosis. The center provides leading-edge services in all aspects of diagnosis, disease management, rehabilitation, psychiatry, and patient support, and gives patients the opportunity to participate in potentially groundbreaking clinical trials in all phases of MS. The NIH has acknowledged the important work of the Center through its allocation of more than $44-million in research grants, the largest amount ever awarded by the NIH for MS research.

Stroke Center (Stroke and Vascular Neurology) This program includes an outstanding team of medical experts who specialize in innovative research-based, clinical approaches to evaluating, treating, and rehabilitating patients with cerebrovascular diseases. Services include the early diagnosis of stroke, a specialized neurointensive care unit, and a state-of-the-art inpatient stroke unit. Our clinicians are available at all times for emergency consultation with referring physicians. 

Epilepsy Center Our Epilepsy Center provides expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy and related disorders. The center features outstanding epileptologists, a new state-of-the-art, 24-hour inpatient epilepsy monitoring unit, and full outpatient EEG and diagnostic capabilities.

Center for Headache and Pain Medicine The Center employs a comprehensive approach to pain disorders, including headache and migraine. Specialists from throughout Icahn School of Medicine, including world class neuroradiologists, are available to assist in management and diagnosis of painful conditions.

Eye Movement and Vestibular Disorder Program Our physicians participate in NASA programs, employing state-of-the-art technology to assess eye movement and vestibular disorders in space and studying their possible applications as treatment modalities on earth. Our scientists have helped define the physiologic basis of these disorders and are performing groundbreaking research for such problems as gait dysfunction and motion sickness.

NeuroAIDS and Neurophysiology Program The NeuroAids Program provides diagnosis and treatment for neurological disorders associated with HIV/AIDS. The program is one of the few in the world to treat the various HIV-related complications that affect the central and peripheral nervous systems in as many as 70 percent of AIDS patients.

Neurological Tumor Program Physicians within this multispecialty program work together to provide outstanding care through state-of-the-art surgical procedures, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and supportive therapy. The program is world acclaimed for the treatment of:

Our physicians have pioneered the treatment of tumors with stereotactic radiosurgery and have developed a number of experimental treatment protocols to improve patients' lives.

Neuromuscular Disease Division This division provides superior, individualized diagnosis, treatment, and compassionate care for patients with disorders in neuromuscular transmission, muscle diseases, and peripheral nerve problems.

Center for Cognitive Health The Center for Cognitive Health is a division of the Department of Neurology and operates within the Friedman Brain Institute of Icahn School of Medicine. The Center is composed of a multidisciplinary team of medical doctors (neurologists, psychiatrists), neuropsychologists, and neuroscientists. Using an innovative, integrated approach to brain and behavior, the Center focuses on optimizing cognitive performance, including comprehensive diagnosis and customized management of cognitive disorders.

ALS/Muscular Dystrophy Program Our ALS/Muscular Dystrophy Program offers diagnosis and treatment of muscular dystrophy and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Our clinical care team specializes in improving quality of life, while our scientists engage in both clinical and laboratory research aimed at finding better treatments and cures.
