Department of Rehabilitation and Human Performance

The mission of the Critical Care Anesthesiology Fellowship Program is to train intensivists in the necessary knowledge, skills, and experience to become leaders in the field of critical care. The program emphasizes the multidisciplinary nature of critical care and it is designed to provide you with experience in a variety of critical care settings, including a dedicated Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU), Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU), and Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit (NSICU) at the Mount Sinai Hospital. In addition, you spend time in the trauma unit in Elmhurst Medical Center in Queens, one of our affiliate hospitals. These sites include nearly 90 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds with approximately 3,000 admissions per year. With this experience, you will be expert in managing a diversity of critically ill patients and capable of supervising a critical care unit. Our program emphasizes advanced procedural skills, parenteral and enteral nutrition point of care ultrasound, and echocardiography.

The Critical Care Anesthesiology fellowship runs in tandem with a Critical Care Medicine Fellowship. By working together, our program can tap into additional resources including a solid didactic curriculum. Experts in a variety of topics pertinent to an intensivist give weekly lectures. We currently offer two one-year fellowship positions approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). It is open to physicians who are board certified, or in the process of obtaining their board certification in anesthesiology.

In addition to critical care anesthesiology, our faculty members also have backgrounds and board certification in cardiothoracic anesthesia, internal medicine, pulmonology, nephrology, surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, neurology, biostatistics, and informatics.

Opportunities to Train in Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology and Anesthesia Critical Care

We offer outstanding training opportunities in both cardiothoracic anesthesiology and anesthesia critical care at The Mount Sinai Hospital and recognize the value in combining training in both subspecialties as well as the increased interest among applicants in doing so. The cardiothoracic anesthesia and anesthesia critical care fellowships at Mount Sinai are separate entities. There is no formal combined or dual cardiothoracic and critical care fellowship program. However, we have and will continue to offer sequential training in both subspecialties to highly qualified applicants through the SF match. As applicant may only be in one match at a time, we created the following procedure to streamline the application process for those interested in the Accreditation Commission on Colleges of Medicine/Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology.

The application rules are:

  • Make your applications to either the cardiac anesthesiology or critical care fellowship at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai through SF Match.
  • Apply initially only to the training program you wish to serve first, and indicate on your application that you wish to serve both fellowships.
  • Both programs will review the application and the Program Directors will confer about to determine your eligibility for interview in each program.
  • If the Program Directors are in agreement, both programs will interview you on the same day.
  • The Program Directors of both programs will confer about your application following the interviews to establish your eligibility to serve both programs.
  • If you are matched into the program to which you have applied, the other will guarantee acceptance for the following year.
  • You will then need to formally apply to the other program through SF match the following year so we can place you into the match for the other program in the following year
  • We will execute an exception agreement between you and the other program ensuring your position for the following year in the other program.
