Offering insights into the benefits of collaboration, our Vascular Surgery Residency Program is well integrated with other specialties at The Mount Sinai Hospital. Our faculty members include vascular surgeons, interventional radiologists, cardiologists, and vascular medicine specialists. Approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, we enroll two residents in our five-year program each academic year.
Vascular Surgery Residency at The Mount Sinai Hospital
Our residency takes place at The Mount Sinai Hospital, and our vascular program is among the busiest in the nation. As a resident, you are exposed to a large number of open endovascular surgical cases. You also receive training in noninvasive diagnostic techniques at the Marie-Josée and Henry R. Kravis Center for Cardiovascular Health, an Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories-accredited facility. The Division of Vascular Surgery has been training vascular surgeons since the early 1960s.
Chiefs will spend their rotations at The Mount Sinai Hospital, Mount Sinai Morningside, and Mount Sinai Beth Israel. Interns will rotate at our training sites: Mount Sinai, Mount Sinai Morningside and Mount Sinai West.
Residency rotations are as follows:
PGY-1
During this year, you spend:
- Three months at Mount Sinai Hospital on Vascular Surgery
- Three months at Mount Sinai West on Vascular Surgery
- Three months at Mount Sinai Morningside on Vascular Surgery
- One month on Interventional Radiology
- One month SICU

We accept applications for the Vascular Surgery Residency program from fourth-year medical students via the Association of American Medical College's Electronic Residency Application Service from the National Resident Match Program (NRMP). Please refer to the NRMP residency program calendar for our application deadline.
We typically invite approximately 40 applicants to interview, with those who have applied early in the match process having more flexibility in the choice of interview dates. We invite candidates to meet our house staff the evening before their interviews at an informal get-together.
We also encourage applicants to return for a second look after the interview. During this Second Look Visit, you spend the day with a vascular resident touring the facility, attending a vascular surgery conference, visiting the operating room and vascular patient ward, and meeting with our Program Director Peter L. Faries, MD, and other attendings, as schedules permit.
The Vascular Surgery Residency Program offers competitive salaries, which vary by year. The current figures, which are subject to change, are:

- SUR376: Vascular/Endovascular Elective at The Mount Sinai Hospital
- Levels: 3, 4
Level Description: This elective is available to U.S. MD and DO students, as well as foreign visiting students.
Weeks: 2, 3, 4 – all year

Time: 6:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

This elective is geared towards medical students who are interested in exploring the field of vascular surgery. The student will join both the attending in office hours and the resident vascular surgery team for rounds during the day. Students are expected to scrub in on many types of vascular procedures, including carotid artery surgery, aortic aneurysm repair, and lower extremity bypass surgery. Students will gain familiarity with the various types of examinations performed in the vascular laboratories; they will also learn appropriate ordering and interpretation of test results. The student will have the opportunity to see patients in the outpatient office, scrub in on elective and emergent surgeries, and participate in the postoperative care of the vascular patient.

- SUR378: Vascular/Endovascular Sub-Internship at The Mount Sinai Hospital and Mount Sinai West
Levels: 4
Level description: This elective is available to U.S. MD and DO students. Not available to foreign visiting students.

Location: 2 weeks at The Mount Sinai Hospital and 2 weeks at Mount Sinai West
This sub-internship is for students interested in applying into the integrated vascular surgery residency program. Students will be exposed to the full range of vascular surgery, including interventional radiology and non-invasive laboratory techniques, as well as scrubbing in the operating room. Students will be intimately involved in the postoperative management in the recovery room and in the intensive care unit. They will also attend vascular conferences at Mount Sinai. Students will spend two weeks on rotation at The Mount Sinai Hospital main campus and two weeks at Mount Sinai West. Opportunities to participate in clinic and office care will also be available. Students may also participate, if desired, in on-going research. A call schedule will be arranged for availability for vascular emergencies.
