Genetic counselors play a crucial role in the medical, psychological, and familial well-being of patients, helping them discover and understand the genetic and genomic indications that affect their health.  Opportunities in the field of genomic medicine are growing in the era of precision medicine. Our Program equips students with the skills to thrive in the profession through immersive clinical rotations with leading genomic scientists throughout the Mount Sinai Health System.

Mission Statement
The mission of the Master of Science in Genetic Counseling Program aligns with the mission of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences: to train the next generation of leaders in scientific and clinical discovery, innovation, education, health policy, clinical care, and advocacy, in a diverse, equitable, and inclusive learning environment.

Program Objectives
In accordance with the institutional mission, the MSGC Program strives to achieve the following goals:

1. Provide a balanced didactic and clinical experience that incorporates the medical, scientific, and psychosocial skills necessary for the profession of genetic counseling consistent with the practice-based competencies
2. Promote cultural understanding and sensitivity to the needs of clients/patients of all ages
3. Enable students to understand and adhere to ethical and professional standards
4. Promote intellectual motivation and the critical thinking skills required to create lifelong learners
5. Promote collaborative interactions within the discipline of genetics and genomics and among/between all health care providers
6. Promote the pursuit of research in genetic counseling
7. Promote the profession of Genetic Counseling
8. Prepare students to become certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling
9. Continue to redefine itself in the face of a rapidly changing profession

The Master of Science in Genetic Counseling program continually boasts high-caliber students who enter the program with a variety of educational and personal backgrounds that enrich the collective experiences of all. As of September 2026, for the three most recent graduating classes (2024, 2025, 2026), the program has:

• 88 percent first-time Board certification pass rate (29/33)
• 0 percent attrition rate (0/36)
• For the classes graduating in 2023, 2024, and 2025, 80 percent of graduates (28/35) obtained employment within three months of graduation; 100 percent of graduates seeking employment in the field secured positions within one year of graduation
