Message from the Director
The MD/PhD training program at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai offers each student a broad range of opportunities in an outstanding research environment that is integrated with a well-rounded, nationally acclaimed medical education. Our program has been continuously funded by the NIH’s Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) since 1977. The mission of our program is to create future leaders in science and medicine who are committed to transformational advances in healthcare.
MD/PhD student receive the best of Mount Sinai’s resources, including training and research opportunities in numerous multidisciplinary institutes, clinical experience in a medical center and medical school that are both ranked among the top in the country, and affordable student housing in a vibrant part of New York City adjacent to Central Park. In addition to performing cutting edge research in some of our nation’s best laboratories, our students are proud to serve each other and the community, whether it is volunteering to support patients displaced by Hurricane Sandy, directing a free medical education program for middle school students, managing the East Harlem Health Outreach Partnership—a clinic run by medical students that serves local uninsured residents, or helping to end the Ebola outbreak.
Mount Sinai, which ranks #4 in NIH funding per principal investigator (2014 AAMC ranking), is ideally poised to explore the rapidly intersecting frontiers of technology and biomedicine, having made major investments in high performance computing, computational biology, genomics, molecular pathology and imaging. A $2.25 billion strategic plan has financed multiple recent expansions, including the new Institute for Genomics and Multiscale Biology and a 7,680-core bioinformatics server cluster called Minerva. The recently completed Hess Center for Science and Medicine has added 550,000 square feet of laboratory and clinical space for collaborations among hundreds of new faculty and physicians. Our Center for Technology, Innovation and Entrepreneurship supports partnerships between students, entrepreneurs, and industry leaders and was created to accelerate the development of new clinical treatments, medical devices, and technologies. An exciting new partnership between Mount Sinai and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute will combine Mount Sinai's strengths in biomedical research with RPI's excellence in engineering and computational sciences.
The MD/PhD program builds on a strong legacy of committed faculty and administrators and extraordinary students who have made our program one of the best in the country. Welcome to our community!
