This one-year, ACGME-accredited fellowship with an optional, second research year, takes place at The Mount Sinai West and the Mount Sinai Morningside hospitals in Manhattan and at Mount Sinai’s affiliated James J. Peters Bronx Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
The fellows actively engage in the assessment and treatment of substance use and co-occurring disorders in specialized inpatient and outpatient settings. They develop expertise in pharmacological treatment options such as Buprenorphine, Methadone, Naltrexone, Acamprosate, Disulfiram, and others. Additionally, fellows gain expertise in various psychotherapies for addictive disorders, including group therapy, motivational interviewing, and other therapeutic approaches.
Supervision is provided by experienced professionals dedicated solely to addiction, including Board Certified Addiction Psychiatrists, Addiction Medicine Attending Physicians, and Psychologists. This fellowship program also allows trainees to focus on a specific area aligned with their interests. They also have opportunities to teach and supervise psychiatry residents and medical students, as well as assume leadership roles in multidisciplinary teams.
The program incorporates didactic education covering the biological, psychological, and social theories of addiction. It also includes academic activities like grand rounds, journal clubs, and research projects. Trainees can opt for a second year of the fellowship, which offers extensive involvement in addiction psychiatry research activities. They have the chance to collaborate with internationally renowned scientists and researchers who specialize in addictions. A wide range of research opportunities is available, spanning basic science, neuroimaging, human laboratory studies, and treatment outcomes research. This comprehensive approach ensures a well-rounded clinical and research training experience.
To be eligible for this fellowship program, candidates must have completed an ACGME-accredited psychiatry residency. They are also required to possess a valid New York State medical license and an individual DEA number.
The program accepts applications through ERAS and participates in the MATCH. The program sponsors visas.
