ANNOUNCEMENT
FOR 2011 PILOT & FEASIBILITY STUDIES
Division of Liver Diseases, NIH P20 Grant
Hepatic Oxidant Stress and Fibrosis in Alcoholic Liver Injury
REQUESTS FOR APPLICATIONS TO FUND ALCOHOL-RELATED RESEARCH
The Division of Liver Diseases was awarded an NIAAA Mini-Center grant to study oxidant stress and fibrosis in alcoholic liver injury. Funds are available to support new Pilot & Feasibility Projects in the next fiscal year (August 1, 2011-July 31, 2012). Funded projects will receive discounted use of Mammalian, Zebrafish, and Pathology cores.
The Center will support meritorious but unfunded studies as Pilot Projects to promote their growth into competitive projects that can attract support from federal grants. The Pilot Project Program aims to stimulate the exploration of new, innovative research in pursuit of the Center's themes and goals, and to recruit new and qualified investigators into the field of alcoholic liver disease and fibrosis. These awards will be given for one year and will be renewable for a second year depending on suitable progress. Awardees will be expected to participate in Center activities which include journal clubs, works in progress, and a seminar series.
ELIGIBILITY
All academic full-time Faculty are eligible to become members of The Center. Application for membership occurs simultaneously with application for a project. Projects will be considered on any aspect of fundamental or applied research relating to basic liver function, pathophysiology or disease within the Center's basic themes of oxidant stress, alcoholic liver disease, and hepatic fibrosis. Preference will be given to:
- Junior Faculty investigators with research interest in the Center's theme "Oxidant stress and fibrosis in alcoholic liver injury".
- Established investigators interested in transitioning to research on alcohol or fibrosis.
- Proposals that demonstrate utilization of the Center's cores (Mammalian, Zebrafish, Pathology)
Junior investigators are strongly encouraged to apply.
APPLICATIONS
Applications should include the title, central hypothesis, specific aims, and research plan not to exceed 5 single spaced pages with references. GCO paperwork is not required. Funds are available for 1-2 years with a maximum request of $22,000/year. Interested individuals should send the electronic version of their applications and their NIH Biosketch in pdf format by May 1, 2011. Applicants will be expected to present their projects to our External Scientific Advisory Committee in July 2011. Notification of final status will be communicated by the end of July 2011.
