The core of the Research Section of Genetics, Molecular, and Cell Biology is the intellectual collaboration of three major scientific leaders and their laboratory teams:
- Roger Hajjar, M.D. has been studying a molecular pump that regulates calcium flow and allows the heart to contract and relax. This research is leading to new understanding of heart failure related to aging. A new recruit to Mount Sinai, Dr. Hajjar is a world leader in heart muscle research and efforts to prevent rejection of the transplanted heart.
- Dr. Bruce Gelb’s genetic research looks into the causes and prevention of congenital heart disease. His internationally recognized research is helping to understand the development of the heart and works to counteract the genes that lead to congenital heart defects.
This groups sustains and supports the group that works in heart and electrical failure.
