Affilate-Based Faculty

The Affiliate Faculty Track is designed for faculty functioning exclusively at an academic affiliate of the School of Medicine . The track is not intended for individuals based at Mount Sinai Hospital or at an integrated teaching program site, e.g. Elmhurst Hospital Center, Bronx Veterans' Administration Medical Center; physicians and researchers* at these integrated sites will be eligible for full-time faculty titles if they are actively involved in educational endeavors.

Faculty in the Affiliate Track may not receive compensation from Mount Sinai .

Faculty in the Affiliate Track will not have a term of appointment. They may be terminated at any time upon written notification by the Department Chair. In the event that an affiliation contract is terminated, Affiliate Track faculty appointments at that institution will automatically be terminated.

Recommendation for appointment will be required from the President of the affiliate institution. The affiliate will be responsible for verifying the credentials of candidates applying for appointment in the Affiliate Faculty Track. Following appointment, the affiliate institution will inform MSSM of any changes that would affect an individual's faculty status. At intervals of no greater than five years, the affiliate institution must reconfirm the credentials of all physicians in the Affiliate Faculty Track.

  1. Clinical Instructor

    Qualifications: Appointment at this level may be extended to individuals who have completed their training. Candidates must possess excellent clinical skills and demonstrate commitment to the teaching of Mount Sinai students, residents, and fellows.

    Appointment: Appointment to this position will be at the discretion of the Department Chair, upon recommendation by the Chief of Service at the academic affiliate.

     

     

  2. Instructor

    Qualifications: Appointment at this level may be extended to individuals who are employed full-time at the affiliate institution and have completed their training. Physicians must possess excellent clinical skills. Research candidates must possess excellent investigative skills. All must demonstrate commitment to the teaching of Mount Sinai students, residents, and fellows.

    Appointment: Appointment to this position will be at the discretion of the Department Chair, upon recommendation by the Chief of Service at the academic affiliate.

  3. Assistant Clinical Professor

    Qualifications: Appointment at this level may be extended to individuals who possess excellent clinical skills and are perceived by other physicians in the institution and community as excellent care givers. Candidates must play an active role in the education of Mount Sinai students, residents, and fellows.

    Appointment: Appointment to this position will be at the discretion of the Department Chair, upon recommendation by the Chief of Service at the academic affiliate.

  4. Assistant Professor

    Qualifications: Appointment at this level may be extended to individuals who are employed full-time at the affiliate institution. Physicians must possess excellent clinical skills and be perceived by other physicians in the institution and community as excellent care givers. They will be expected to play an active role in the education of Mount Sinai students, residents, and fellows. Researchers must possess excellent investigative skills and be perceived by other scientists in the institution and community as excellent scientists. They will be encouraged to become involved in the education of Mount Sinai trainees.

    Appointment: Appointment to this position will be at the discretion of the Department Chair, upon recommendation by the Chief of Service at the academic affiliate.

  5. Associate Clinical Professor

    Qualifications: Appointment at this level may be extended to individuals who are excellent clinicians committed to education:

    • Teaching – Candidates must play a role in the education of Mount Sinai students, residents, and fellows. They should be valued as teachers by both trainees and peers.
    • Clinical Care – Candidates must possess excellent clinical skills and will be perceived by other physicians in the institution and community as excellent care givers and important clinical resources. Candidates may be involved in clinical research at the affiliate institution.
    • Service – Candidates will participate in administrative activities critical to the success of the educational programs at the affiliate institution.

    Appointment: Appointment to this position is upon recommendation by the Chief of Service at the academic affiliate and the Department Chair, with subsequent approval by the Committee on Appointments and Promotions.

  6. Associate Professor

    Qualifications: Appointment at this level may be extended to physicians who are employed full-time at the affiliate institution.

    Candidates must be excellent clinicians committed to education:

    • Teaching – Candidates must play a role in the education of Mount Sinai students, residents, and fellows. They should be valued as teachers by both trainees and peers.
    • Clinical Care – Candidates must possess excellent clinical skills and will be perceived by other physicians in the institution , community and region as excellent care givers and important clinical resources. Candidates may be involved in clinical research at the affiliate institution.
    • Service – Candidates will participate in administrative activities critical to the success of the educational programs at the affiliate institution.
    • Scholarship – Scholarship may be evidenced through a wide variety of venues: journal publications; textbook contributions; editorial service; presentations; clinical summaries; published standards of care; new teaching methods; program development for MSSM or in other professional medical organizations; program organization

    Appointment: Appointment to this position is upon recommendation by the Chief of Service at the academic affiliate and the Department Chair, with subsequent approval by the Committee on Appointments and Promotions.

  7. Research Associate Professor

    Qualifications: Appointment at this level may be extended to researchers who are employed full-time at the affiliate institution. Candidates must be excellent scientists with an interest in education. They must play an important role in basic science and/or clinical research at the affiliate institution.

    • Research – Candidates must possess excellent investigative skills and must be perceived by other researchers in the institution and community as important scientific resources.
    • Scholarship – Candidates must have a solid record of scientific accomplishment that will be reflected in: extramural grant support; publications in peer-reviewed journals; textbook chapters; editorial service; invited lectures; participation in scientific organizations; teaching and mentoring.
    • Service – Candidates will participate in administrative activities critical to the success of the research programs at the affiliate institution
    • Teaching – Candidates will be encouraged to play a role in the education of Mount Sinai trainees on site at the affiliate by offering insights and information on the links between research and clinical endeavors They will also be encouraged to participate in research conferences at Mount Sinai and to interact with faculty and trainees.

    Appointment: Appointment to this position is upon recommendation by the Chief of Service at the academic affiliate and the Department Chair, with subsequent approval by the Committee on Appointments and Promotions.

  8. Clinical Professor

    Qualifications: Appointment at this level may be extended to individuals who are expert clinicians and teachers with a demonstrable commitment to trainee education:

    • Clinical Care – Candidates must possess excellent clinical skills. They must be perceived by other physicians in the institution and community as excellent care givers and as significant leaders within their specific clinical areas. Candidates may be involved in clinical research at the affiliate institution.
    • Teaching – Candidates must play a significant role in the education of Mount Sinai students, residents, and fellows. They should be recognized by trainees and peers as superior teachers. Teaching responsibilities and leadership in teaching should parallel growth in clinical leadership.
    • Service – Candidates will participate in administrative activities critical to the affiliate institution.
    • Scholarship – Evidence of scholarship will be viewed positively. Scholarship may be demonstrated through a wide variety of venues: journal publications; textbook contributions; editorial service; presentations; clinical summaries; published standards of care; new teaching methods; program development for professional medical organizations; program organization.

    Appointment: Appointment to this position is upon recommendation by the Chief of Service at the academic affiliate and the Department Chair, with subsequent approval by the Committee on Appointments and Promotions.

  9. Professor

    Qualifications: Appointment at this level may be extended to individuals who are employed full-time at the affiliate institution. Candidates must be expert clinicians and teachers with a demonstrable commitment to trainee education:

    • Clinical Care – Candidates must possess excellent clinical skills. They must be recognized by other physicians regionally and nationally as excellent care givers and as significant leaders within their specific clinical areas. Candidates may be involved in clinical research at the affiliate institution.
    • Teaching – Candidates must play a significant role in the education of Mount Sinai students, residents, and fellows. They should be recognized by trainees and peers as superior teachers. Teaching responsibilities and leadership in teaching should parallel growth in clinical leadership.
    • Service – Candidates will participate in administrative activities critical to the affiliate institution.
    • Scholarship – Candidates can demonstrate scholarship through:
      • Publications: articles in peer-reviewed journals; continued publication and presentation of clinical observations, reviews, analytic studies; textbook chapters; reviews and/or development of teaching materials
      • Editorial work: Editing major textbooks and significant journals
      • Innovation: Through state-of-the-art clinical practice, program development and program organization
      • Teaching: Physician/faculty development; track record of invited presentations at professional symposia or medical centers outside the local region (can include clinical summaries, standards of care, innovative teaching methods)
      • Acquisition of service or research grants to support clinical or teaching endeavors will be considered.

    Appointment: Appointment to this position is upon recommendation by the Chief of Service at the academic affiliate and the Department Chair, with subsequent approval by the Committee on Appointments and Promotions.

  10. Research Professor

    Qualifications: Appointment at this level may be extended to individuals who are employed full-time at the affiliate institution. Candidates must be expert scientists with a demonstrable commitment to trainee education. They must play an indispensable senior role in basic science and/or clinical research at the affiliate institution:

    • Research – Candidates must possess superior investigative skills. They must be recognized by other scientists regionally and nationally as excellent researchers, important scientific resources and significant leaders within their specific areas of expertise.
    • Scholarship – Candidates must have a strong record of: peer-reviewed extramural funding; independent, peer-reviewed publications in excellent scientific journals; authorship of textbooks or textbook chapters; reviews and/or development of teaching materials; invited presentations at scientific and medical conferences
    • Service – Candidates will participate in administrative activities critical to the success of the research programs at the affiliate institution
    • Teaching – Candidates will be encouraged to play a significant role in the education of Mount Sinai students, residents, and fellows by offering insights and information on the relationship between research and clinical endeavors; this can be accomplished through participation in grand rounds and other learning fora at the affiliate. They will also be encouraged to participate in research conferences at Mount Sinai and to interact with faculty and trainees. Teaching responsibilities and leadership in teaching should parallel growth in research leadership.

    Appointment: Appointment to this position is upon recommendation by the Chief of Service at the academic affiliate and the Department Chair, with subsequent approval by the Committee on Appointments and Promotions.

* All Affiliate Track faculty are expected to possess doctoral degrees
