Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency

The Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery runs two ACGME accredited residency programs, each accepting one applicant per year:

  1. Cardiac Surgery. This is a 6-year Integrated ACGME Residency (I6) program designed to prepare recent medical school graduates for the American Board of Thoracic Surgery (ABTS) certification, meeting all ABTS Cardiothoracic Pathway and Integrated program requirements.   3. General Thoracic Surgery. This is a 2-year Independent ACGME Fellowship program designed to prepare Residents that have successfully completed an ACGME accredited general surgery residency program for ABTS certification, meeting all ABTS General Thoracic Pathway requirements. Additionally, we offer four non-ACGME accredited advanced fellowship positions:

  1. Cardiac Surgery. There are three non-ACGME accredited advanced fellowships. These are normally one year in duration. The content is tailored according to an individual’s requirements and experience, providing focused training in areas including mitral and aortic reconstruction, heart failure surgery, and coronary revascularization.

  3. General Thoracic Surgery. This is a one-year, non-ACGME accredited, advanced fellowship position designed to provide intensive training in minimally invasive (VATS) approaches to lobectomy and esophagectomy.
