The Edward Merker, MD Annual Lecture in Translational Endocrinology was given by Dr. Nira Ben-Jonathan, PhD who is Professor of Cancer and Cell Biology at the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Ben-Jonathan is a leader in the field of breast cancer. Her research focuses on the role of lactogens, estrogens, and endocrine disruptors in tumor growth and responsiveness to chemotherapy. The lecture was on “Prolactin and Breast Cancer”. Dr. Ben-Jonathan discussed the local production of Prolactin by breast tissue, its role in tumor growth and resistance to chemotherapy, and blocking the Prolactin receptor as a novel approach to suppressing tumor growth and resistance to chemotherapy.
