1. Department of Medicine

Division of Infectious Diseases

The Division of Infectious Diseases within the Department of Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai combines exceptional patient care, advanced education, and cutting-edge research to address the challenges posed by various pathogens. We specialize in both preventing and treating infections, with particular emphasis on health care-associated infections, antimicrobial stewardship, and the care of immunocompromised patients. Our approach integrates multiple disciplines, creating a distinctive environment for research and patient care, enabling us to address both current and emerging challenges in infectious diseases.

The Division’s Infection Prevention program covers eight hospitals and the vast ambulatory footprint of the Mount Sinai Health System. Our faculty members serve as hospital epidemiologists, directing the larger mission of decreasing healthcare-associated infections, minimizing occupational hazards, outbreak mitigation, and addressing the health care response to emerging pathogens. We conduct surveillance of infections and multidrug-resistant organisms, create policies to prevent health care-associated infections, investigate outbreaks, and spearhead interventions to reduce the use of invasive devices. We also maintain educational programs for healthcare workers and advise on regulatory requirements, all while upholding health equity in our analyses and interventions.

Established in 2004, the Mount Sinai Antimicrobial Stewardship Program is recognized by the Infectious Diseases Society as a Center of Excellence. Co-led by our Division’s expert physicians and infectious diseases trained clinical pharmacists, the program delivers expert clinical consultations, drives innovative research, and is at the forefront of quality and safety both in the hospital and outpatient setting. Additionally, faculty in our Transplant Infectious Diseases Program provide specialized care for immunocompromised patients, including solid organ transplant recipients and patients with hematologic malignancies.

Fellowships

The Division of Infectious Diseases offers comprehensive fellowship programs designed to train the next generation of infectious disease specialists. Our fellowships provide extensive clinical experience, research opportunities, and specialized training in various aspects of infectious diseases, including HIV medicine, transplant infectious diseases, health care epidemiology, and antimicrobial stewardship.
