Critical Care Medicine Fellowship at The Mount Sinai Hospital

Our Critical Care Medicine Fellowship at The Mount Sinai Hospital is recognized as one of the oldest critical care fellowships in the nation. More than 250 fellows have graduated from the program and have gone on to distinguished careers in critical care throughout the world.

We now offer one- or two- year Critical Care Medicine Fellowship positions to physicians who are board certified or eligible in internal medicine. About 20 percent of new entrants into the fellowship have already completed fellowships in disciplines such as pulmonary medicine, infectious diseases, and nephrology before joining our program.

Curriculum

Our fellow rotates through a range of intensive care units (ICUs). All of these ICUs have state-of-the-art instrumentation and a complete array of equipment in order to function as a stand-alone critical care organization. Equipment includes mechanical ventilators, bedside electrocardiogram, pulse oximetry and pressure monitoring, bronchoscopes, dialysis machines, digitized radiographic viewing, point-of-care testing, echocardiography, and ultrasound. In addition, The Mount Sinai Hospital has implemented an electronic medical record system.

Fellows are also invited to participate in electives, which include:

  • Airway Management
  • Bronchoscopy
  • Echocardiography
  • Medical ICU
  • Neuroradiology
  • Ultrasound

In addition to clinical care, we encourage our fellows to develop a research proposal with faculty mentorship. We are involved in a variety of types of project such as basic and translational science, clinical trials, and quality improvement research and interventions. You complete the entire research process from generating a research question; seeking Institutional Review Board approval; managing study design and data collection; performing statistical analysis; and authoring journal articles, abstracts, and textbook chapters. We hold weekly research meetings to discuss project ideas, track progress, and encourage feedback and collaboration.
