Master of Public Health

Epidemiology has evolved tremendously since the COVID-19 pandemic, providing students a unique opportunity to enter this crucial field. By choosing the Epidemiology track in the Master of Public Health (MPH) program, you will learn the skills needed to analyze public health trends, design and implement studies, and interpret the results for policy and program development. With the tools to investigate disease origins, as well as prevention and intervention strategies at the individual and societal levels, you can take on leadership roles in clinical and population-based health research in government, health care, and private industry.

Our curriculum provides a holistic understanding of the facets of epidemiology. Your coursework will cover biostatistics, clinical outcomes research, and electives in infectious disease, chronic disease, molecular, genetic, and environmental and occupational epidemiology.

Please note that while the Master of Public Health program generally takes two years to complete, those in the Epidemiology concentration who enroll in the spring should allow additional time to complete the program.

To determine if the Epidemiology concentration is right for you, explore the additional resources and get a preview of the competencies and courses.

Students in this concentration will develop skills and competencies to be successful in public health including:

Develop capacity to complete in-depth epidemiological analyses using statistical software.
Critically synthesize the public health research or practice literature for a selected health topic.
Distinguish between a statistical association and a causal relationship using appropriate principles of causal inference.
Identify circumstances under which non-randomized (observational) designs are the best approach to addressing important health-related knowledge gaps.
Use tabular or graphical methods to explain model results.

The MPH degree requires the completion of a total of 45 credits, an applied practice experience, and a culminating experience. In addition to the general course requirements, students will take these concentration-specific courses:

Introduction to Biostatistics
Introduction to Epidemiology
Epidemiology II
Epidemiology III
Epidemiology IV
Research Seminar in Epidemiology
Applied Linear Models I
Applied Linear Models II

Remaining credits are accrued through electives, seminars and independent study. The track advisor should be consulted early to plan ahead for the completion of the MPH degree requirements. Refer to the Epidemiology Checklist for a full list of courses.

Associate Professor, Medicine, and Infectious Diseases

Dr. Factor is an internist and infectious disease specialist. Her current research includes the epidemiology of emerging pathogens and prevention strategies for influenza.
