James J. Peters VA Medical Center

Internal Medicine Program

The James J. Peters VA Medical Center is comprised of a modern, well-equipped tertiary care facility and a nursing home on an attractive campus. The James J. Peters VA Medical Center is a major teaching affiliate of the Mount Sinai Hospital and the Icahn School of Medicine. The residency program in internal medicine is fully accredited by the residency review committee of the ACGME

Residents also spend a considerable amount of time at the North Central Bronx Hospital. Adjacent to Montefiore Medical Center, North Central Bronx Hospital is a city hospital that is about 15 minutes from the VA. Spending time at both institutions permits the resident to gain experience with a wide range of illnesses in males and females of varying age.

To be considered for positions, applicants must have passed steps 1 and 2 on the USMLE with superior scores. Three letters of recommendation are required. Although the James J. Peters VA Medical Center participates in ERAS, written applications are also accepted. Evidence of scholarly achievement such as publications or an advanced degree (especially a Ph.D.) is highly regarded by he admissions committee. Both matched and unmatched positions are available. Applications should be received by November 30 and interviews are offered during November and December to qualified candidates. Please note, that, due to the large number of applications received, we are unable to acknowledge receipt of applications.

  • 16 residents per postgraduate year level. Preliminary positions are available during the first year of training for those who will pursue training in fields other than internal medicine. A limited number of IMGs may be sponsored for H-1 visas.
  • 32 full time and 8 part time attendings in primary care and all medical subspecialties

Each resident is assigned a preceptor who is a full-time attending and who meets with the resident during regularly scheduled primary care clinic sessions.

Residents participate in the ABIM-in-training examination and are expected to take the boards in internal medicine at the completion of the program.
