Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Across our 250 Graduate Medical Education (GME) programs, we support a powerful portfolio of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives to ensure the wellbeing of our entire community. We remain committed to dismantling racism and bias in our own learning environments, and together with our residents and fellows, we work to address health disparities in the patient populations we serve.

For over eight years, the GME Diversity Council has provided leadership, vision, and planning for DEI efforts by collaborating with Mount Sinai Health System’s Office for Diversity and Inclusion. Providing both proactive and responsive support, the Council works to identify and remove barriers, address any DEI concerns, and develop policies that maximize the potential of every resident and fellow.

Co-chaired by Jessica Reid-Adam, MD, MSCR, Senior Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion for Graduate Medical Education, and Gary C. Butts, MD, Dean for Diversity Programs, Policy, and Community Affairs, the Council is focused on three major areas for continual improvement:

  • Recruiting diverse applicants for our training programs
  • Fostering career advancement opportunities for residents and fellows from underrepresented backgrounds in medicine
  • Promoting an inclusive learning environment, where all feel they belong
