Transfusion Medicine and Cellular Therapy

Mount Sinai’s Transfusion Medicine and Cellular Therapy Laboratories include the Blood Bank, the Cellular Therapy Laboratory, and the Apheresis Center.
Our staff includes three Board-certified physician medical directors and over 50 licensed medical technologists, technicians, and registered nurses. Our Blood Bank operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, providing over 45,000 units of blood, platelets, and plasma for transfusion every year. Licensed by the New York State Department of Health, our facilities are also accredited by AABB, the College of American Pathologists, and the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy. The Transfusion Medicine and Stem Cell Therapy laboratories also participate in numerous studies requiring apheresis stem cell collections and immunohematology laboratory testing.

The Blood Bank supports both the inpatient and outpatient transfusion services at Mount Sinai with immunohematology testing, and by providing blood, plasma, platelets and other products for transfusion..

The Cellular Therapy Laboratory supports busy bone marrow / stem cell transplant and multiple myeloma programs, with over 160 transplants performed annually.

The Apheresis Center provides therapeutic apheresis (TA) and peripheral blood stem cell (PBSC) collection procedures to support highly-active service areas from hematology to solid organ transplantation.
