About the NIH Brain and Tissue Repository

The Mount Sinai NIH Brain and Tissue Repository (NBTR) was established in 1985 to serves the human postmortem brain tissue needs of investigators within the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and the Bronx VA Medical Center and the Neuroscience community at large. The NBTR holds and distributes brain tissue and other brain tissue-related biological specimens to research organizations for scientific studies. Each donation is characterized in detail by macroscopic and microscopic neuropathological examination and by either direct examination of the donors during life and/or through review of all pertinent medical records and interview of persons knowledgeable about the donor.

The NBTR is supported by:

  • The NIH (NIMH, NICHD, and NINDS Brain and Tissue Repository),
  • The VISIN3 Veterans Administration Mental Illness Research, Education and Clinical Center (MIRECC),
  • The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and
  • The Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (P50-AG05138; Mary Sano – PI)
