Signature Event 2013

The Signature Event 2013, organized by ISMMS's Center for Multicultural and Community Affairs (CMCA) was held at a new venue, the Metropolitan Club, on Monday, November 11, 2013. Sadly, one of CMCA's own, Andy Heineman passed away just before our event. The event was dedicated to his memory and his legacy and steadfast commitment to CMCA.

Former First Lady, Michelle Paige Paterson (once again) and The Honorable David Paterson served as Honorary Chairs. Tiffani Chambers (for the first time) co-chaired the dinner committee with Denise Ellison (for her fourth year as chair/co-chair). The Doctors' Committee was chaired by Robert J. Desnick, MD; Sandra K. Masur, PhD; Barbara Murphy, MD; and Albert Siu, MD, all four of whom were active participants on the committee and helped to promote the event to ISMMS faculty. Alicia Hurtado, MD, and Jacques Jospitre, MD, chaired the Alumni committee for the third year and also put together an alumni table. Our student committee this year was chaired by Carine Davila, Jacqueline Hairston, Matthew Hernandez, and Jennielle Jobson.

The 2013 event was held to increase awareness and to highlight the work of CMCA, to recognize four individuals who were selected as honorees, and to expand our networks of support. Honorees in 2013 included: Theodore V. Wells Jr., Esq., for the Corporate Diversity Award; Lloyd Williams (on behalf of The Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce) for the Distinguished Community Service Award; Samuel L. Guillory, MD, for the Outstanding Health Care Leadership Award; and Maria Vezina, EdD, RN, NEA-BC, who received the first The Lloyd R. Sherman Special Recognition Award, for her passion, advocacy, and support for CEYE programs and support of the CMCA mission.

We were joined once again by NBC4 news anchor Lynda Baquero, who served brilliantly as the Emcee. Dennis S. Charney, MD, Dean of the ISMMS, provided greetings. This year we were fortunate with the participation of more Department Chairs and program directors who took sponsor tables, including ISMMS Departments of Medicine (Dr. Barbara Murphy); Neurosurgery (Dr. Joshua Bederson); Health Evidence and Policy (Dr. Annetine Geljins); Emergency Medicine (Dr. Andrew Jagoda); Surgery (Dr. Michael Marin); Anesthesiology (Dr. Reich); and the Mount Sinai Hospital Department and Nursing and Administration. Tables were also purchased by the CMCA; Ray Cornbill; and Terry Krulwich, PhD. Outside organizations that took sponsor tables were: Urban Markets Group at Morgan Stanley; MetroPlus Health Plan, and CUNY. A visionary table was pledged by Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP ($15K). Two individuals took Championship tables (10K) Catherine Morrison Golden and Pat and Bob Levinson. Individual sponsorship tables were purchased by: Tiffani and Reggie Chambers, Diane and Blaine Fogg, Sam Guillory, and Andy Heineman. Trustees attending included Catherine Morrison Golden, Carla Harris, Lewis Jones, Pat Levinson, Chris Williams, and John Winkleman.

Dinner was preceded by a cocktail reception and a silent auction (using a new outside auction company, the Helping Hand and supplemented with direct donations to CMCA; profit of $10,215). "The Vault," a Jazz ensemble, played for the second year during cocktails and dinner, then cranked up the music to end the evening with party dancing. After beginning the evening with welcoming remarks and the dedication of the event to Andrew Heineman by Dr. Butts (Debbie Heineman was recognized for attending the event), Lynda Baquero served as Emcee. Three students: Sarah Ann Anderson, Anthony Melendez, and Alexa Mieses made brief remarks to the audience giving heartfelt remarks about what CMCA has meant to them and how much they have benefitted from the program. Pledge cards were made available on tables to support CMCA student and faculty participants ($3,250 was raised with a pledge of $500). Dancing was available at the end of the formal program.

We were filled to capacity with 275 guests in attendance: Mount Sinai department chairs, faculty, staff, and a record number of students, community members, representatives from NY Power Authority, Emblem Health, NBC4, CUNY, Paul Weiss law firm, Continuum Health, and MetroPlus Health Plan.
