Blackberry Requests and Activation Policies July 2011

Mount Sinai Health System provides Blackberrys and cell phones to facilitate communications across the institution. Services are provided to conduct official business in the course of assigned duties. Per HR policies 13.5 and 13.6, Mount Sinai reserves the right to access and disclose all messages sent over its electronic mail system and may monitor the use of the e-mail system or review the content of e-mail records. Inappropriate use may result in loss of access privileges and disciplinary action up to and including dismissal.

Non-exempt employees shall not use any Blackberry or Mobile Communication Device to perform work outside of the employee’s regular work hours. During non-working hours, employees may briefly check their device for newly received communications authorizing work. However, an employee shall not unilaterally decide to utilize a Blackberry or Mobile Communication Device to perform work during their non-working hours.

Devices provided to access e-mail and phone services are the personal responsibility of the individual holding the device and the device should be cared for in an appropriate manner. The policies articulated below govern the usage, care of the device, and outline steps to be taken in case of loss or damage to a device. Also explained are usage provided, upgrade policy and overseas travel:

Usage Policy

  • The basic package costs $65/month/per device for 400 voice minutes, unlimited e-mail, and internet services.
  • TEXT messaging is included.
  • Phones are for business purposes only and should only be used by a Mount Sinai employee.
  • It is important that all users maintain updated software on their devices by dialing *228, option 2 every 90 days.

Lost or Stolen BlackBerry

  • User needs to contact MSH Messaging via x4HELP to send "Ping of Death" to delete all data stored on the device.
  • E-mail Carolyn Tizzano carolyn.tizzano@mountsinai.org and Sherri Gibbs sherri.gibbs@mountsinai.org in Telecommunications to have the phone and data services suspended.
  • User needs to provide Name, Blackberry number, and contact information.
  • Replacement devices take two to three business days to arrive: (Excluding Weekends & Holidays)
  • Devices are insured by the institution with a $90 deductible which is the user’s responsibility.
  • The deductible may be waived if the users device is eligible for an upgrade.
  • User to provide personal check or money order for $90 deductible to Mount Sinai Health System.
  • Once deductible is completed, order with normal 2 to 3 day turnaround.
  • Once the user is notified that the replacement device has been received the device may be picked up at Telecommunications KCC 9th Floor, Room 908. Hours: Mon – Fri, 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM.
  • Hospital users must contact MSH Messaging via x4HELP to have the replacement Blackberry synchronized with e-mail system.
  • MSSM users must contact the MSSM helpdesk at x47091.

Lost / Damaged/Stolen Peripherals

  • User is responsible for holders, chargers, interface cables, and all peripherals.
  • Telecom does not keep an inventory of these items.
  • User can go to any Verizon or Electronic store for replacements (There is a store on the west side of Madison Avenue between 97th and 98th Street).

Damaged / Non-Functional Blackberry

  • A water damaged device is considered a lost device and the user must pay $90 to have it replaced.
  • E-mail Carolyn Tizzano carolyn.tizzano@mountsinai.org and Sherri Gibbs sherri.gibbs@mountsinai.org in Telecommunications to have the phone and data services suspended.
  • Turnaround time is two to three business days: (Excluding Weekends & Holidays).
    • New Blackberry will be on site in two to three business days.
    • Carolyn Tizzano or Sherri Gibbs in Telecommunications has to change the ESN and activate the device. Hours: Mon - Fri, 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM.
  • User contacts MSH Messaging via x4HELP or Medical School Messaging at 212-241-7091 to have Blackberry associated to institutional E-Mail system.
  • MSSM users must contact the MSSM helpdesk at x47091

Blackberry Upgrades

  • All Cell Numbers, not devices, are on two year contracts from the time the device is received.
  • The cost of upgrading devices is based on current Verizon Wireless charges and/or promotions.
  • Upgrading the equipment of a CELL NUMBER prior to the end of contract will be charged at full retail price.
  • These retail prices and cancellation fees require Departmental signoff and fund a number.
  • Devices that have fulfilled contract period requirements:
    • Users can request a device upgrade by emailing Carolyn Tizzano carolyn.tizzano@mountsinai.org or Sherri Gibbs sherri.gibbs@mountsinai.org.
    • Turn around 5 business days.
    • Telecommunications will contact users when device arrives for activation.
    • User to contact MSH-Messaging via x4HELP to have the Blackberry associated to institutional E-Mail system.
    • MSSM users must contact the MSSM helpdesk at x47091 .

Overseas Travel

  • Contact Telecommunications at least five business days prior to departure, verifying that all International features are activated.
  • The domestic Verizon BlackBerry’s use CDMA which only provides coverage in the continental United States.
  • If you do not have an International BlackBerry, only one loaner is available
    • Five business days notification is required to get a loaner.
  • User must carry the Verizon International Technical Support Card to receive assistance overseas.
  • All international calls are billable at $1 to $4 per minute; there is no change for data or e-mails.
