The Department of Emergency Medicine has multiple divisions, each actively involved in training and research.
Divisions
The Division of Emergency Medicine Services (EMS) and Disaster Preparedness is led by several dual-boarded Emergency Medicine and EMS physicians and includes specialists in the areas of EMS quality, simulation, innovation, and policy as well as in health system emergency management and disaster preparedness. We seek to advance the field of EMS and Disaster medicine through research, implementation science and innovation. We understand that in order to serve patients, this work must be integrated it into regional systems of care, and across our Health System and in the community at large.
To meet these goals, we develop prehospital education and research opportunities for our EMS practitioners, medical students, residents, and fellows. We have received significant research funding from the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Department of Transportation, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Patient-Centered Research Outcomes Institute, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation, and a myriad of private foundations.

Critical care is the diagnosis, treatment, and support of critically ill and injured patients. It encompasses pre-hospital resuscitation, treatment of life-threatening conditions in the emergency department, and inpatient intensive care. Approximately 15 percent of a patient’s total hospital critical care takes place in the Emergency Department, which often serves as a bridge connecting prehospital and inpatient care.
In 2017, the Mount Sinai Health System created a Division of Emergency Critical Care <link to new page – as below]>to enhance educational opportunities and develop clinical guidelines. The Division is committed to training residents, fellows, and medical students through both didactics and bedside teaching, developing clinical guidelines, and conducting critical care research in both the emergency department and inpatient settings.

The Emergency Ultrasound Division promotes the use of bedside ultrasound in the evaluation and management of patients in the emergency department. Using portable technology and goal-directed exams, we can assess basic cardiac function, abdominal pain, and thoracic disorders at the bedside. Ultrasound is also widely employed to assist in bedside procedures such as central and peripheral venous access, paracentesis, abscess aspiration, and others.

The Division of Emergency Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine is committed to promoting excellence in the care of our growing population of older adults and those with serious or life-limiting illnesses within the Emergency Departments of the Mount Sinai Health System. In addition to providing high-quality care to patients during their ED stay, our division is also focused on developing innovative strategies to align emergency care with appropriate inpatient and outpatient resources. To this end, we work closely with the Brookdale Department of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine on a number of research, education, and clinical initiatives, and we have faculty with dual appointments in both departments. We are also committed to advancing palliative care in the safety net through our affiliation with New York City Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst Hospital and through the work of our faculty in the Department of Quality & Safety at NYC H+H.

The Division of Global Health works to improve the health outcomes of populations affected by emergencies both domestically and globally through partnership, education, and research. Faculty within the Division have expertise across a wide range of areas including emergency health systems development, tropical and travel medicine, infectious diseases, disaster response, and care of asylum seekers and torture survivors. Recognized leaders in their respective fields, faculty have worked in academia, governmental, non-governmental and U.N. agencies with a common goal of improving delivery of emergency care, decreasing health inequities and promoting social justice. The Global Health Fellowship and Global Health Resident Track strive to develop leaders in academic emergency medicine who have the skills and tools for a successful career devoted to the reduction of health disparities through improvement of emergency health systems. Current projects include strengthening of emergency health systems in Latin American, Africa, and Asia , work with asylum seekers and torture survivors in the U.S., improving the delivery of emergency care to Native American communities in partnership with Indian Health Services, and research related to Covid and injury surveillance.

Clinical Informatics aims to bring the best information to the point of care. Emergency Medicine at Mount Sinai has been a driving informatics forward for over 15 years. Our faculty are on the forefront of informatics research, and efforts to improve patient care both inside the ED and beyond its walls. We also partner with regulatory agencies and industry to improve clinical workflows, and the EHR experience. Our faculty also help lead Mount Sinai’s ACGME-accredited Informatics fellowship, and include board-certified Clinical Informaticists and hold leadership positions in ACEP and EMRA.
There are many opportunities to get involved with projects, including NIH-funded research that leverages mobile apps and EHR clinical decision support. Our system-wide EHR implementations and optimizations mean there is always an opportunity to study interventions to improve quality and efficiency. Our faculty are also leading efforts to deliver virtual care (telemedicine) and remote patient monitoring, post-discharge.

The Mount Sinai Health System uses simulation to advance medical knowledge and research, improve the quality and safety of patient care, and provide an enriching and learner-friendly environment for students. Our simulation program provides educational opportunities for health care practitioners in various fields and stages of learning, from medical and nursing students to advanced learners.
The Division of Simulation offers hands-on experiential training and expertise across the Mount Sinai Health System. With multiple simulation centers and two fellowships, our Division includes local, regional, and national experts in simulation and medical education.

The experts at the Division of Emergency Medicine Sports Medicine are active in the academic field of sports medicine and sports team/event coverage both locally and nationally. We offer a joint primary care sports medicine fellowship with the Department of Rehabilitation and Human Performance. We maintain a hands-on approach within our hospital communities, providing orthopedic education at all levels, as well as patient follow-up. Additionally, our experts coordinate with other specialists for any follow-up care.

The Division of Medical Toxicology is committed to excellence in the clinical, academic, and administrative arenas. Our expertise encompasses diagnosis and management of overdose, environmental and industrial exposures, adverse drug events, and drug addiction. We strive to advance toxicology education at all levels of medical training as well as to conduct research to improve the care of poisoned patients. The division is composed of medical toxicology faculty throughout the Mount Sinai Health System and at Elmhurst Hospital Center.
