Message from the Chair

The Department of Pharmacology and Systems Therapeutics focuses on the biological mechanisms underlying complex physiologies and pathophysiologies and translating biological knowledge into new therapeutics. We are a basic science department within the School of Medicine.

Our mission is twofold:

  • To develop an understanding of the common mechanisms and processes that underlie multiple diseases
  • To serve as a nucleating unit for drug discovery and drug action research in the many disease-focused research programs in clinical departments

The department provides a comfortable, intellectual home to researchers whose expertise ranges from computational and mathematical biology to the study of biochemical and cell biological mechanisms of physiological and disease processes in animal models and humans.

A unifying theme of the department is the analysis of complex disease systems using systems biology approaches for the development of new paradigms for drug discovery. The department is home to the Systems Biology Center New York, a multidepartment, multi-institutional entity funded by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences. This center catalyzes research in the use of systems approaches for drug discovery, understanding drug action, and predicting adverse events.

Excellence in teaching and research training complements our research mission. Our goals are to:

  • Teach medical students to become physicians rooted in biological knowledge
  • Train graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in the increasingly complex and interdisciplinary research programs that translate basic biological knowledge into useful diagnostics and therapeutics

The training activities of the Department of Pharmacology and Systems Therapeutics are supported by a predoctoral training grant from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences and a postdoctoral training grant from the National Institute for Drug Abuse.
