Research scientists play critically important roles in academic medical centers. In addition to maintaining active research laboratories, they also serve as the primary teachers for preclinical medical students and graduate students. However, these instructors receive little by way of faculty development focused on their growth as educators. The literature on continued professional development courses focused on teaching and curriculum design for researchers is scarce; hence, this remains an area of critical need and opportunity.
The Investigator Education Skills Training (INVEST) Program is an innovative eight-session course that focuses on practical teaching skills, curriculum design and evaluation techniques.
The goal of the INVEST program is to produce expert educators within basic science and its disciplines.
The program is comprised of two parts:
- Teaching skills instruction
- A stepwise approach to curriculum design and evaluation/assessment,/li>
Contact hours include didactics, experiential learning opportunities, group work and application-based workshops. Students also practice teaching in simulated sessions and receive feedback on their skills.
