Visiting Students from LCME-Accredited Schools

Students in good standing who have not yet received their MD or DO degree are eligible to apply for an elective at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Students should be in their final year of medical school.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants who attend LCME-accredited schools in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico must use the Visiting Student Learning Opportunity (VSLO) website.

Students must accept offers through VSLO and upload all post-decision requirements one month in advance to the start date. Students are fully cleared to begin their elective when their application status says “Student Offer.”

VSLO will open on April 15th, 2024 for the 2024-2025 Academic year. 

Students who can apply through VSLO will be asked to upload the following:

  • CV/Resume
  • Photograph
  • Transcript

Once you have been accepted on VSLO you will have to upload the below documents to be fully cleared to start your elective.

  • AAMC Standardized Immunization Form
  • BLS or ACLS Certificate
    • You must upload the full certificate, uploading only the online portion of the training will not be accepted
  • COVID-19 Vaccination Documentation (including booster)
  • HIPAA Training Certificate
    • You must complete the training using this site: HIPAA Training Online
    • Any other HIPAA Training will not be accepted
  • Mask Fit Test Certificate
    • If accepted for an elective, you will also be asked to get mask-fitted at Icahn Mount Sinai
  • New York State Infection Control Certificate
  • If your elective involves Elmhurst Hospital or the Bronx VA Medical Center, you are required to upload a 10-Panel Toxicology Screening. (If you’re unsure you should contact the elective coordinator found in the elective description)

  • Students who are accepted to electives at Elmhurst Hospital or the Bronx VA Medical Center will be required to complete additional documents. (These are additional to the toxicology screening mentioned above.)
  • For Elmhurst Hospital: Please reach out to the Elective Coordinator, which can be found in the description of the elective in the catalog.
  • For the Bronx VA Medical Center:
    • A background check and multiple documents must be completed at the Bronx VA Medical Center at least one month prior to the start of the elective. To schedule a fingerprinting appointment and receive the documents needed to rotate here contact curry@va.gov

Influenza and COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement

As part of the New York State Department of Health requirements, all students, physicians, and staff must be vaccinated for seasonal influenza and also be fully vaccinated and boosted for COVID-19. Visiting students will be required to provide proof of their influenza and COVID-19 vaccinations.
