Mount Sinai’s BioMe™ Biobank Receives Accreditation from College of American Pathologists

BioMe is the only biorepository in New York State with CAP accreditation.

Mount Sinai's BioMe™ Biobank Program today announced that it has received accreditation from the College of American Pathologists (CAP), and is the first such program in New York State to achieve this honor. CAP accreditation certifies that the BioMe biorepository operates at the highest level of excellence and clinical-grade standards.

The CAP is the first organization to offer an accreditation program for biorepositories—laboratories that store biological samples such as blood plasma and DNA for research and commercial purposes. Accreditation is based on a rigorous on-site inspection, as well as a review of a biorepository's operations. There are an estimated 1,000 biorepositories in the United States, but only 23 have earned CAP accreditation since the program began in 2011. About half of those are academic biorepositories for research.

"CAP accreditation is a rare honor for an academic biorepository, and validates our commitment to providing medical researchers with the highest-quality service and samples," said Erwin Bottinger, MD, Principal Investigator of BioMe Biobank and Director of the Charles Bronfman Institute for Personalized Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

BioMe Biobank maintains an in-house quality assurance program to ensure that its customers—research scientists—are satisfied with the quality of the services and samples it receives.

Nearly 28,000 patients at The Mount Sinai Health System have consented to participate in the BioMe Biobank program, founded in 2007 by the hospital's Institute for Personalized Medicine. The biorepository, which stores de-identified DNA and plasma from patients' blood samples, is an important resource for medical researchers at Mount Sinai and at other medical institutions. BioMe Biobank has received Institutional Review Board approval to allow researchers to notify participants if they are eligible for a particular research study. To date, samples from BioMe Biobank have been used to study diabetes, chronic kidney disease, cardiovascular disease, dyslipidemia, multiple sclerosis, lupus, fatty liver disease, sarcoidosis, and other medical conditions.
