The Blood Bank Laboratory staff performs testing and prepares blood products to ensure the safest possible transfusion for our patients. Testing includes blood ABO/Rh typing, screening for possible transfusion reaction-related antibodies, and crossmatching blood units in preparation for transfusion. The Blood Bank uses the most advanced methods of testing, with automation designed to provide rapid, accurate test results.
The Blood Bank Medical Directors include three physicians who are board certified in Blood Banking and Transfusion Medicine. The Blood Bank is staffed by over 40 licensed medical technologists and technicians. The Blood Bank operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Over 200,000 tests are performed and over 45,000 units of blood, platelets, and plasma are prepared for transfusion every year.
