A karyotype on the left is a normal female karyotype while the one on the right is obtained from the bone marrow cell from a patient with multiple myeloma. A number of different and complex abnormalities (arrows) are present including gain of chromosomes 7, 15, 19 and 20; loss of X chromosome and 17, as well as structural rearrangements of both chromosomes 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, very complex chromosome 11 abnormalities as well as of chromosome 12.

Mount Sinai’s Tumor Cytogenetics Laboratory provides state-of-the-art services in the detection of acquired chromosomal abnormalities associated with hematological malignancies and solid tumors. Our laboratory offers all available cytogenetic techniques to identify the type and nature of complex structural abnormalities present in malignant (cancerous) cells. We offer a full range of services for clinicians and researchers from Sinai and beyond, including the following assays:

  • Cell Culture
  • Routine G-banded chromosome analysis
  • Interphase and metaphase FISH studies (using over 100 FISH probes)
