A Message from the Vice Chair for Research
Welcome to the Research Division page for the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. As the Vice Chair for Research, I am proud to be a part of a department dedicated to conducting innovative, practice-changing science while supporting and training a diverse group of physician-scientists. Our core of researchers values a collaborative, supportive culture and seeks to improve the quality of patient care via their research endeavors. We value integrity in our research practices and equity for our research subjects and members.
The research core exists in order to accomplish these key objectives:
- Make scientific advances that improve patient care (via clinical, simulation, and basic science research)
- Improve the learning environment (via educational research)
- Establish a culture that drives innovation and inquiry and attracts rising and established scientists
- Continually improve the level and quality of research conducted, with commensurate growth in internal and external collaboration and funding
We are proud of several key areas of excellence in our research enterprise. Our informatics and data-driven research group is extraordinary and has grown in both size and scope, particularly in the area of machine learning/artificial intelligence. Translational research in pain management is a key priority for us as well, largely centered on addressing the opioid epidemic using novel genomics approaches. We also conduct perioperative outcomes research, deploying multiple research modalities to answer questions important to the specialty. Finally, we have a long tradition of medical education and simulation-based research, addressing novel approaches to medical education and utilizing the simulated environment to study educational patterns, technical and non-technical skills, and patient safety.
