The academic affiliation between the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute fosters educational and research collaborations and stimulates the development of new technologies to radically improve the diagnosis and treatment of human disease.
Both schools bring special strengths to this partnership. Mount Sinai is a leader in biomedical research and patient care, while Rensselaer excels in engineering and computational sciences. The relationship offers cross-disciplinary education that enriches research at all levels and creates new technologies that generate new intellectual property. This collaboration accelerates the pace of innovation and entrepreneurship across the health sciences.
Center for Engineering and Precision Medicine
This long-term partnership has developed the Center for Engineering and Precision Medicine, which focuses on research, education, and commercialization. Research efforts will emphasize translational science that marries the engineering expertise of Rensselaer with the medical expertise of Mount Sinai in order to develop medical interventions that improve patient health. We concentrate on three areas: immunoengineering, neuroengineering, and regenerative and reparative medicine.
In addition, the center is creating a joint doctoral program in engineering and precision medicine. We anticipate developing further educational opportunities, including master’s degree and certificate programs as well as a National Institutes of Health NIH T32 Training Program. The center’s development labs serve as the translational arm of the center’s research, enabling us to commercialize our discoveries in a way that keeps researchers tied to the entire process.
