Irving J. Selikoff Advanced Scholarship

The Icahn School of Medicine offers scholarship awards to scientists and physicians working in Mexico, Chile or Brazil who were previously awarded the Irving J. Selikoff Scholarship in Environmental and Occupational Medicine. The scholarship supports the conduct of environmental and occupational medicine research that enhances the clinical and basic research capacity in the Latin American country. The scholarship award includes:

  • Mentorship by a Icahn School of Medicine faculty member who guides scholar through the course of the study
  • Three, all expenses paid, one-month visits to New York City, where scholars work with their Mount Sinai mentors on developing the research project, data analysis and publication of results
  • US $15,000 in funds for research expenses in the home country
  • Travel funds are awarded for scholars to present research results in international conferences
  • Assistance and funds for publication of research results in international journals

Eligibility

Applicants are required to meet the following criteria:

  1. Have excelled in completing a research project through the Irving J. Selikoff Scholarship Program
  2. Have completed doctoral level training and obtained the respective degree with a minimum of 5 years experience in the field
  3. Have an academic faculty or government appointment position in an environmental or occupational medicine setting
  4. Have a demonstrated track record of environmental/occupational health related research including research publications
  5. Demonstrate that the proposed research will impact the health or will enhance the state of science in the home country
  6. Have demonstrated institutional support for participation in the fellowship, including time allotted to complete the research project
  7. Have a commitment to serving as faculty in future courses in the home country
  8. Have thorough knowledge of the English language
  9. Submit a high quality, feasible research project plan to be conducted during the scholarship
