Elmhurst Hospital Center

Pediatric Primary Care Program B

Introduction

The Pediatric Primary Care Residency Training Program at Elmhurst Hospital Center is designed to provide a diversified educational experience to develop future primary care pediatricians capable of delivering comprehensive, coordinated health care to their patients. Our mission is to train pediatricians in the competencies and skills needed to practice general pediatric medicine with a focus on the humanistic aspects of care, including health prevention, promotion and maintenance. The next generation of pediatricians will be well equipped to meet the diverse challenges of providing care for infants, children, adolescents and young adults in the new health care paradigm.

Under the aegis of Icahn School of Medicine, one of the premier medical schools in the nation, this program combines and outstanding academic curriculum with diversified clinical experiences to create a dynamic educational environment that encourages the personal as well as professional development of future pediatricians. Through its affiliation at Elmhurst Hospital Center, Icahn School of Medicine also provides all professional staff, oversees clinical and laboratory services, coordinates research activities and sponsors 95 residency and fellowship training programs.

Elmhurst Hospital Center, a member of New York City's municipal health care system, is a 585-bed tertiary-care hospital serving a culturally diverse community of more than 1 million people in western Queens County. This largely immigrant population, representing more than 100 nationalities, presents a rich source of educational experiences for the training of residents and provides an opportunity to address a multiplicity of health care needs for an at-risk population.

The hospital's recently opened Community Medical Center, which houses all ambulatory services and facilities, was designed to enable the utilization of a primary care model, mirroring care provided in a private office setting. In addition, ambulatory services are provided at satellite centers and schools. This is but one example of a driving commitment to play a leadership role in the delivery of such services through efforts to initiate, develop and participate in innovative programs dedicated to increasing access to care, expanding the primary care base, and improving the health status of the community. Elmhurst Hospital also encourages graduating pediatric residents to establish practices within the community, thus providing additional health care options available to patients. Elmhurst Hospital continues to forge the way for new partnerships between public and private health providers in its ongoing efforts to provide quality health services for patients.
