Division Overview

The Mount Sinai Division of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (DOEM) is committed to preventing and treating occupational and environmental injury and illness through clinical services, education and research. Mount Sinai's groundbreaking history in identifying, treating, and preventing occupational-related illness encompasses a multi-disciplinary approach through specialized clinical centers. The Division’s centers for Occupational and Environmental Medicine are members of the New York State Occupational Health Clinic Network (OHCN) as well as the Association of Occupational and Environmental Clinics (AOEC).

Integral to the public health infrastructure in New York City, State, and within the occupational medicine field nationwide, the division's achievements are evident in ongoing initiatives that assist tens of thousands of workers across the United States. The Division’s faculty and staff include clinicians, social workers, industrial hygienists, ergonomists, epidemiologists and statisticians with expertise in a range of occupational and environmental health problems. Our interdisciplinary staff provides:

• Care for patients injured or made sick by work or the environment
• Base-line and periodic, occupationally specific health screenings
• Monitoring and treatment of responders exposed to the World Trade Center disaster
• Risk and hazard assessments of the workplace
• Community and workplace outreach and education
• Benefits counseling
• Training programs for residents of Occupational and Environmental Medicine as well as graduate students in industrial hygiene and ergonomics
• Research related to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of occupational illness and injury
