For Faculty, Staff and Trainees

Physicians and scientists on the faculty of Icahn School of Medicine often interact with pharmaceutical, device and biotechnology companies (“industry”) to improve patient care, develop new therapies and achieve scientific breakthroughs. In order to promote an ethical and transparent environment for conducting research, providing clinical care and teaching, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai requires that faculty report their relationships with industry.

Industry relationships reported by faculty are posted on our website. To learn about your physician’s industry relationships, go to the “Find A Person” link on our website and type in your physician’s name. Click on their name and simply scroll through their profile page to the Industry Relationships section; there you will see the companies your physician collaborates with. If you have any questions, we encourage you to discuss them with your physician.

Report of Relationships with Outside Entities (Annual Form) is completed annually online through Sinai Central. Your form must be updated during the year if you enter into new arrangements or your existing arrangements change.

Who must report/disclose:

  • Full-time faculty
  • Part-time faculty
  • Select voluntary faculty

What needs to be reported/disclosed:

  • All relationships with outside entities must be disclosed
  • Chairpersons must also disclose any grants/donations made to the Department

Financial Interest in Research Disclosure Form must be completed and submitted with each Research Application filed with the Grants and Contracts Office (GCO).

Who must report/disclose:

  • All faculty identified as Investigators on grants submitted to the GCO

What needs to be reported/disclosed:

  • The information from your Annual Report of Relationships with Outside Entities will import into this form. All relationships with outside entities that are related to the research must be disclosed

Review Procedure/Management of Financial Interests:

  • Business: Financial interests that present a potential business conflict of interest will be reviewed by the Staff Conflicts of Interest Review Committee (SCCOM).
    Recommended steps to manage or eliminate a conflict are forwarded to the Chief Executive Officer whose decisions are final. For more detail, refer to the Policy on Business Conflicts of Interest.
  • Research: All financial interests related to research are reviewed by the Financial Conflicts of Interest in Research Committee (FCOIRC). If the FCOIRC identifies a conflict that can be neutralized with a management plan, the research may proceed at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. For more detail, refer to the Policy on Financial Conflicts of Interest in Research.

Voluntary Faculty must complete a Report of Relationships with Outside Entities disclosure form annually online through Sinai Central if they:

  • Perform research at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, or
  • Participate on Institutional Committees, or
  • Perform paid administrative functions for a Department or Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

You must update the form during the year if you enter into new arrangements or existing arrangements change. All faculty performing research must also complete and submit a separate Financial Interest in Research Disclosure Form with each research application filed with the Grants and Contracts Office (GCO).

Staff must complete a Report of Relationships with Outside Entities disclosure form annually online through Sinai Central if they:

  • Participate on Insitutional Committees, or are in selected departments

Who has access to the information I report to Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai on my disclosure forms?
Access to the details that you provide on your disclosure forms is rigorously protected to ensure confidentiality. However, relationships with industry along with company names are posted publicly on Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai’s website but do not include dollar amounts. 

What am I supposed to report on my disclosure forms?
Please call our COI Helpline at 212-241-0845 for guidance on what you need to report. 

Why do I have to report my relationships with outside companies?
Transparency of relationships outside Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai; safeguards patient care, research and education. Reporting your outside relationships gives Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai the ability to review, evaluate and address any potential conflicts. 

I don’t have a conflict of interest so why do I have to report my outside activities?
A conflict of interest can be actual or perceived. Although you may feel that your financial interests don’t create a conflict, it may appear to others that they do. An independent evaluation of your financial interests by the institution addresses any perception or appearance of a conflict of interest. 

Who do I go to for approval of my outside activities?
You can refer to the following Approval Grid for requirements. Faculty should obtain approval from their Department Chair for all outside activities. Department Chairs are required to obtain approval from the Dean. If you are staff, you should seek approval from your Department Chair and/or Vice President, as applicable.

What should I do if I’m being filmed or interviewed?
