Understanding Brain-Body Connections

At the Brain and Body Research Center at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, we take a multidisciplinary approach to influence research and collaborate on how the brain and body interact with disease. Our team of physicians and researchers explore how the brain controls peripheral diseases and vice versa. These include diseases caused or aggravated by stress such as depression and anxiety, diabetes, autoimmunity and inflammation, irritable bowel syndrome, cardiovascular disease, skin diseases, and more. We perform trials in patients to identify disease mechanisms, then use preclinical models to dissect the complex way in which the brain and body interact with each other. Bringing these insights back to patients enables us to perform innovative clinical trials for the development of novel treatments.

We know that when researchers work together, breakthroughs will advance brain and body discoveries. The Center works with numerous departments and institutes across the Mount Sinai Health System and, specifically, Icahn Mount Sinai, to harness advances in this growing field and better diagnose and treat today’s most impactful diseases. Seeking to understand how the brain affects our biological responses is central to learning how the body adapts to stressors.
