It all begins with an idea. Identify a need, bring it to us, and we’ll help you turn it into a solution, a product, and a business. Mount Sinai BioDesign is a biomedical incubator, welcoming collaborations from surgeons, physician-scientists, engineers, and other innovators. Schedule a session with our leadership to discuss your concept for a novel MedTech device. Together, we will explore the feasibility and path forward to develop it into a commercial reality.

Mount Sinai BioDesign uses the most advanced tools and capabilities and draws upon clinical expertise across a wide range of disciplines throughout the Mount Sinai Health System. Among the resources are a full-time team of engineers backed by computer-assisted design, 3D printing, and machine prototyping technologies. Significantly, these resources are embedded in The Mount Sinai Hospital, steps away from the operating rooms and interventional radiology suites. The proximity is intentional. Surgeons stop in throughout the day to talk with engineers and to try out prototypes from our lab. It is an environment in which product iterations happen within hours or days, not months.

Advancing Medical Innovation

Over time, we’ve developed a streamlined process in which new projects are onboarded and launched in our pipeline:

1. Needs Identification

Projects arise from within clinical practice, initiated by physicians who understand and identify areas for innovation. Breadth and depth of need are confirmed by the BioDesign team through interviews and market research.

2. Ideation

Potential solutions are identified, modeled, and prototyped within BioDesign; leveraging expertise in computer-assisted design, 3D printing technology, and machining.

3. Iterative Prototyping

Prototypes are put into the hands of physicians to allow for rapid iterative development. Advanced prototypes are built and prepared for advanced testing and verification.

4. Translational Development

Late-stage prototypes are tested on-site using next-gen phantom, cadaver, or large-animal models.

If you have an idea for a medical innovation, we welcome the opportunity to talk with you. Schedule a one-on-one with our team to discuss your concept and the need that such a medical device can fill in your field of expertise. We will explore the feasibility of your novel device and how our process can help bring your idea to fruition.
