Gerardus “Gerold” Bongers, PhD received his PhD from the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in the Netherlands. He did his postdoctoral training in the laboratory of Sergio Lira at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai with a focus on host-microbiome interactions in preclinical models of colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease. Thereafter, he joined Janssen Research & Development and worked on the development of a live biotherapeutic therapeutic for the management of inflammatory bowel disease. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Oncological Sciences and facility director of the Microbiome Translation Center (MTC) at the Precision Immunology Institute at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (PrIISM). His main goals are to understand the role of the human microbiome in health and disease and translate these findings to improve health.
