The Mindich Child Health and Development Institute at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai embraces its commitment to nurture tomorrow's scientific leaders in pediatric health. We provide a dynamic environment for trainees at various stages of their academic journey, including post-doctoral fellows, MD-PhD candidates, PhD students, and MD candidates, and several opportunities to work under the guidance of our nationally recognized faculty. In every educational offering, our aim is to equip trainees with the tools and network necessary to drive the field of pediatric research forward.

Our Educational Resources and Programs

Our Pilot Grant Program supports up to two new trainee projects for one year, each in the amount of $10,000. These grants are intended to foster innovative basic, clinical, or translational research for postdoctoral fellows, PhD, or MD-PhD students currently training under the direction of Institute members.

The purpose of the program is to support early career scientists in pursuing an independently-funded research project that is separate from their current ongoing projects with their mentor. Successful applications are required to demonstrate that the applicant can achieve independence and that the project will generate preliminary data that could lead to career development or other grants relevant to children’s health.

This yearly competition is held in conjunction with the Institute’s annual retreat, which occurs during the fall. The competition is open to pre-doctoral trainees in both the graduate and medical fields, post-doctoral trainees (post-docs, senior research associates, etc.) and students at Icahn Mount Sinai.

To apply, those interested must submit a 250-word abstract following a call for applications each spring. The Institute then chooses three finalists for each of our pre-doctoral and post-doctoral divisions. Finalists must give a 15-minute presentation at the retreat, and we select one winner for each division. Each winner receives an award certificate and gift prize.

Co-hosted by Icahn Mount Sinai’s Department of Pediatrics and The Mindich Child Health and Development Institute, this series of seminars highlights child health research from our internal and visiting researchers. It serves as an opportunity to enrich the entire scientific community throughout the Mount Sinai Heath System.

Designed to appeal to researchers interested in diabetes, allergy/asthma, cardiovascular outcomes, and neurodevelopmental diseases, the series consists of both didactic seminars and practical workshops. We also include topics applicable to all research, such as approaches for consortium-based research, the use of technology and apps to engage community-based participatory research, and tools for generating figures to visualize research results.

The Institute uses a pre-award funding database, GrantForward, which offers the scientific community a comprehensive list of federal, foundation, and other funding sources.

GrantForward features a user-friendly search interface that allows users to filter by sponsor, grant, or applicant type. Users may also create saved search results and automatic email alerts at desired frequencies. The platform additionally generates a list of recommended grants based on your researcher profile and interests. Members of the Institute may contact us for details on how to establish an account.
