Training the next generation of scientific leaders in pediatric medicine.

The Mindich Child Health and Development Institute facilitates breakthrough translational research on a diverse range of diseases that affect infants, children, and adolescents. By immersing outstanding physician-scientists and researchers in an intellectually rich and supportive environment, we foster scientific investigation with the aim of rapidly advancing treatment. Housed within the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, our collaborative bench to bedside approach guides everything we accomplish together, including training the next generation of scientific leaders in pediatric medicine.

Recent advances—particularly in DNA sequencing—have ushered in an exciting new biomedical era. In a matter of days, for example, it is now possible to sequence all of the protein-encoding portions of the human genome.

These advances help us act on several remarkable translational research opportunities. Together with partners across the Mount Sinai Health System, The Mindich Child Health and Development Institute develops robust paradigms for understanding the effects of both genetics and the environment on children’s health. Led by Bruce D. Gelb, MD, our goal is to personalize medicine through genetics and genomics. By building on existing strengths spanning several departments, institutes, and research programs, we continually leverage our resources to accelerate the achievement of this goal.

Along with the leadership of Dr. Gelb, The Mindich Child Health and Development Institute also has an external physician-scientist board comprised of Scott Baldwin, MD (Vanderbilt University), Marie Lynn Miranda, PhD (University of Illinois Chicago), and Joseph Piven, MD (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.)

In every investigation, The Mindich Child Health and Development Institute remains committed to expanding the scientific infrastructure for genomic technology, as well as developing new therapies that enhance therapeutic efficacy, diagnostic accuracy, and disease outcome predictions for our pediatric patients.
