The Center for Translational Medicine and Pharmacology presents a variety of speakers at different career stages from prestigious organizations. These speakers present topics addressing the latest research on a range of translational medicine topics.

Maria I. New International Prize for Biomedical Research

The Maria I. New International Prize for Biomedical Research is awarded annually to distinguished biomedical researchers in careers devoted to the prevention and treatment of human disease—those whose discoveries at the bench have translated into patient care. Prior winners include Carl June, MD, PhD, of the University of Pennsylvania (2022), Jean-Laurent Casanova, MD, PhD, of Rockefeller University (2023), and Christine E Seidman, MD of Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard University (2024).

Terry F. Davies Distinguished Professorship Lecture Series

The Terry F. Davies Distinguished Professorship Lecture Series is held annually in honor of Dr. Terry F. Davies’ long and distinguished record of significant contributions to our knowledge of endocrine physiology and pathology in the area of thyroid disease. Past topics and lecturers include Nuclear Receptors and the Circadian Regulation of Metabolism, presented by Mitchell A. Lazar, MD, PhD of the University of Pennsylvania (2024) and Calorie Restriction for Weight Loss: What’s Up with the Skeleton?, presented by Clifford J. Rosen, MD of Tufts University School of Medicine and the Maine Health Institute of Research (2023).

Distinguished Speaker Series

The Center’s Distinguished Speaker Series emphasizes investigators who are highly accomplished in their respective fields. Recent topics and lecturers include “Iron Chaperones Control the Fate of Iron in Mammals,” presented by Caroline Philpott, MD, Chief of Genetics and Metabolism Section, National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, National Institutes of Health; “Paranoid Plants: Genetic Conflict in the Immune System.” by Detlef Weigel, PhD, Director of the Max Planck Institute for Biology Tubingen, Germany; “Interception in Bone Homeostasis, Disorders, and Pain,” by Xu Cao, PhD, Lee Riley Professor, Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Director, Center for Musculoskeletal Research, Johns Hopkins University; “The Landscape of Autophagy in the Brain, Neurologic Disease, and Beyond,” by Zhenyu Yue, PhD, Professor of Neurology and Neuroscience,The  Friedman Brain Institute, Director of the Basic Research of Movement Disorders Program at Mount Sinai; “Aging Ffrom the Lens of Metabolism,” by Danica Chen, PhD, Professor of Metabolic Biology, Nutritional Sciences and Toxicology, University of California, Berkeley; and “Osteoimmunology and Autoimmune Diseases,” by Hiroshi Takayanagi, MD, PhD, Professor and Chair of the Department of Immunology, University of Tokyo.
