Performing Research to Improve Your Health and Quality of Life

The Mount Sinai Center for Translational Medicine and Pharmacology strives to develop therapeutics to prevent and treat illness and improve health and quality of life. To do this, we bring together researchers from various fields to investigate the intersections among their projects and accelerate collaboration.

At the Center, we serve as the bridge between pre-clinical studies and safe, effective, and innovative approaches to disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. We focus on developing medicines, technologies, and practices that incorporate the latest research. And we strive to build on discoveries in basic science to more effectively and quickly improve patient care and save lives. Medical research is progressing more and more quickly, thanks to our greater understanding of the molecular basis of disease, improved data collection, and increased emphasis on collaboration. The goal of our Center is to make sure that patients will reap the benefits of these myriad efforts.

At Mount Sinai, there are several components to the translational research we perform:

Developing appropriate questions: One of the keys of translational research, as with all medical research, is developing questions that are worth studying. We focus on lines of inquiry that can be applied in a clinical setting, to improve the lives of patients. We look to address unmet medical needs.

Working cross-disciplinarily: Too often, scientists get “siloed” in their individual projects and perspectives and are unable to see the bigger picture. We believe that collaborating across disciplines can enable scientific discoveries to progress—and reach patients—more quickly. At the Center, we bring together scientists in different fields, including physician-scientists, who are more likely to view research with an eye to clinical care.

Working to bring these solutions to market: This effort involves working with regulatory consultants, contract development and manufacturing organizations, and other industry leaders who have the resources and experience to take pre-clinical lab discoveries into early phase clinical trials and into the hands of clinical health care providers. This, of course, is our goal: to truly make a difference in people’s lives.

At the Center, our translational research spans a variety of fields, including:

  • Aging
  • Cardiology
  • Endocrinology
  • Hematology
  • Immunology
  • Nephrology
  • Neurology
  • Psychiatry
