Institute for Regenerative Medicine

Director’s Message

Fulfilling the promise of regenerative medicine to deliver new therapies to patients requires the concerted efforts of basic researchers working across multiple scientific disciplines, translational scientists, and clinicians. The goals of the Institute for Regenerative Medicine are to generate a collaborative, welcoming, and diverse environment that promotes interdisciplinary interactions and collaborations; to provide a forum for communicating exciting research findings and exchanging ideas; to train the next generation of researchers in interdisciplinary science; and to enhance the diversity of our scientific community.

To accomplish these goals, we sponsor seminars from leading international researchers in regenerative medicine, organize Work in Progress talks where faculty and trainees present their latest research, hold an annual scientific retreat that is open to all our members, and provide pilot grant funding to support innovative projects. Our membership spans almost all the basic and clinical departments at Mount Sinai, and we work closely with other Institutes and Departments to recruit faculty and co-sponsor research Centers and initiatives including scientific meetings, retreats, and pilot grant funding.

Our pre- and post-doctoral trainees receive laboratory-based training in multiple disciplinary areas and make an essential contribution to our mission. In addition to the programs organized by the Graduate School and by Postdoctoral Programs, the IRM provides our trainees with opportunities to present their research and funds Transition-to-Independence mini-grants for senior postdoctoral fellows and travel grants that support attendance of graduate students at national and international scientific conferences.

We recognize and condemn the negative effects of social injustices, including racism, on our society in general and within the biomedical research community, and are committed to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment within the IRM and more broadly in the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. We are dedicated to increasing diversity at the student, postdoctoral, staff and faculty levels, and we have initiated, and co-sponsor Pipeline Programs aimed at exposing local underserved middle and high school students to the excitement and promise of biomedical research.

We welcome all faculty, staff, and trainees with an interest in regenerative medicine to join the IRM and participate in our mission to make exciting discoveries that improve human health.
