The Institute for Regenerative Medicine provides robust education and training resources to support innovation in the field of biomedical research and increase the visibility of underrepresented students. Our pre- and post-doctoral trainees receive laboratory-based training in multiple disciplinary areas and make an essential contribution to our mission. In addition to the postdoctoral programs and degree programs within the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, the Institute provides our trainees with opportunities to present their research and funds Transition-to-Independence mini-grants for senior postdoctoral fellows and travel grants that support attendance of graduate students at national and international scientific conferences.

Graduate Education

Our graduate students are drawn from across a wide range of PhD programs at Icahn Mount Sinai. These include the MD-PhD program and PhD program in Biomedical Sciences; the PhD program in Neuroscience; and the PhD program in Clinical Research. Our laboratories also host students from select Icahn Mount Sinai master’s programs in Biomedical Science, Clinical Research, and Biostatistics.

Our students receive rigorous training in laboratory research, bioinformatics, and/or clinical research. They have regular opportunities to present their research in our Work-in-Progress Talks Series and are eligible to apply for travel grants to attend national and international research conferences.

Postdoctoral Training

Postdoctoral training in IRM laboratories prepares trainees for careers in academia, industry, and research-related fields, including biomedical education, medical writing, patent law, and consulting. Our postdoctoral fellows have regular opportunities to present their research in our Work-in-Progress Talks Series. Senior postdoctoral fellows interested in independent careers in academia are eligible to apply for the Institute for Regenerative Medicine’s Transition-to-Independence mini-grants that provide them with funding to generate preliminary data for National Institutes of Health grant applications.

Pipeline Programs

The Institute for Regenerative Medicine believes that increasing the pipeline of underrepresented students entering biomedical research is an effective way to promote diversity of the research community. We have created programs that introduce students from our local underserved middle and high schools to the excitement and power of scientific discovery.

BioEYES at Mount Sinai

BioEYES at Mount Sinai is a K-12 science education program providing classroom-based learning opportunities for underserved middle school students through the use of live zebrafish. BioEYES at Mount Sinai is a branch of the nationwide BioEYES program and was established in 2021 with support from the Black Family Stem Cell Institute, the RTW Charitable Foundation, and Center for Excellence in Youth Education.

Mount Sinai Skin Scholars Program

The Mount Sinai Skin Scholars Program is jointly administered by the Skin Biology and Diseases Resource-based Center and the Center for Excellence in Youth Education, both at Icahn Mount Sinai, and is available to underrepresented students in science and medicine from underserved local high schools. Mount Sinai Skin Scholars take part in a summer program that includes didactic instruction and hands-on laboratory training in stem cell biology, followed by a six-week paid internship in a stem cell research lab at Icahn Mount Sinai the following summer. Students are selected from applicants to the Center for Excellence in Youth Education Summer Program based on their interest in skin biology and diseases.

Stem Cell Scholars Program

The Sinai Stem Cell Scholars program is administered by the Black Family Stem Cell Institute in partnership with the Center for Excellence in Youth Education and is available to underrepresented students in science and medicine from underserved local high schools. Sinai Stem Cell Scholars take part in a summer program that includes didactic instruction and hands-on laboratory training in stem cell biology, followed by an internship in a stem cell research lab at Icahn Mount Sinai during the school year. Students are selected from applicants to the Center for Excellence in Youth Education Summer Program based on their interest in stem cell biology.
