Institute for Regenerative Medicine

Education and Training

The Institute for Regenerative Medicine provides robust education and training resources to support innovation in the field of biomedical research and increase the visibility of under-represented students.

Postdoctoral Training
Postdoctoral training in IRM laboratories prepares our fellows for careers in academia, industry, and research-related fields including biomedical education, medical writing, patent law, and consulting. Our postdoctoral fellows have regular opportunities to present their research in our Work in Progress talks series. Senior postdoctoral fellows interested in independent careers in academia are eligible to apply for IRM Transition-to-Independence mini-grants that provide them with funding to generate preliminary data for NIH grant applications.

Graduate Student Education
Our graduate students are drawn from across a wide range of PhD programs at Mount Sinai. These include PhD and MD PhD programs in Biomedical Sciences, which offers multidisciplinary training areas (MTAs) in Development, Regeneration and Stem Cells, Cancer Biology, Genetics and Genomic Sciences, Immunology, Microbiology, and Pharmacology and Therapeutics Discovery; the program in Neuroscience; and the program in Clinical Research.

Our laboratories also host students from Mount Sinai’s Master’s programs in biomedical sciences, clinical research, biostatistics, and biomedical informatics.

IRM students receive rigorous training in laboratory research, bioinformatics, and/or clinical research. They have regular opportunities to present their research in our Work in Progress talks series and are eligible to apply for IRM travel grants to attend national and international research conferences.

Pipeline Programs

The Institute for Regenerative Medicine believes that increasing the pipeline of under-represented students entering biomedical research is an effective way to promote diversity of the research community. With this in mind, we have initiated and support programs that introduce students from our local underserved middle and high schools to the excitement and power of scientific discovery.

The Sinai Stem Cell Scholars program is administered by the Black Family Stem Cell Institute in partnership with the Center for Excellence in Youth Education (CEYE) and is available to URiSM students from underserved local high schools. Sinai Stem Cell Scholars take part in a summer program that includes didactic instruction and hands on laboratory training in stem cell biology, followed by an internship in a stem cell research lab at Mount Sinai during the school year. Students are selected from applicants to the CEYE Summer Program based on their interest in stem cell biology.

The Sinai Skin Scholars Program is jointly administered by the Sinai Skin Biology and Diseases Resource-based Center and CEYE and is available to URiSM students from underserved local high schools. Sinai Skin Scholars take part in a summer program that includes didactic instruction and hands on laboratory training in stem cell biology, followed by a 6-week paid internship in a stem cell research lab at Mount Sinai the following summer. Students are selected from applicants to the CEYE Summer Program based on their interest in skin biology and diseases.

BioEYES at Mount Sinai: BioEYES is a K-12 science education program providing classroom-based learning opportunities for underserved middle school students through the use of live zebrafish. BioEYES at Mount Sinai is a branch of the nationwide BioEYES program and was established in 2021 with support from the Black Family Stem Cell Institute, the RTW Charitable Foundation and CEYE. This exciting and impactful program was recently featured on CBS New York.
