Founded in 1992, the Mount Sinai Fellowship in Advanced GI/MIS and Bariatric Surgery is one of the first formal training programs for minimally invasive surgery established in the United States. We now offer two (2), one-year positions each academic year (August 1 - July 31) to highly qualified individuals interested in pursuing the fields of Advanced Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Surgery.
The program is based at the Mount Sinai Health System, an 8-campus hospital system with over 43,000 employees in the heart of the New York metropolitan area. Fellows rotate through two hospitals during the year. The Mount Sinai Hospital is a 1,139-bed tertiary care referral center located on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Founded in 1852, the hospital offers a long, proud history of excellence and innovation, not only in clinical practice, but also in research and education. Mount Sinai Morningside is a 495-bed hospital founded in 1847 that serves Manhattan’s Upper West Side, with a remarkable history of research and innovation in bariatric surgery. Both hospitals are teaching facilities of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, an internationally recognized teaching and research institution with $413.1 million in NIH funding in 2020. Mount Sinai is included in the 2020-21 U.S. News & World Report Best Hospital Honor Roll (top 20) out of nearly 5,000 hospitals nationwide.
With the formation of the Division of Laparoscopic Surgery in 1992, Mount Sinai was one of the first medical schools in the United States to recognize the field as a distinct specialty within general surgery. Mount Sinai now boasts one of the nation's most clinically active minimally invasive surgery programs. The Advanced GI/Bariatric fellow will spend six months at The Mount Sinai Hospital (East Side) and six months at Mount Sinai Morningside (West Side), scrubbing on a large number of diverse procedures including both laparoscopic and robotic approaches:
- Bariatric: laparoscopic gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, adjustable gastric band revision and removal, biliopancreatic diversion/duodenal switch and revisional procedures
- Foregut: fundoplication, paraesophageal hernia repair, Heller myotomy and gastric/small bowel resection
- General Surgery: cholecystectomy, common bile duct exploration, laparoscopic inguinal and ventral hernia repair; complex hernia repairs (suprapubic, subxiphoid and flank); revisional hernias; diagnostic laparoscopy
- Transplant: laparoscopic donor nephrectomy
- Robotic: sleeve gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, revisional bariatrics, ventral hernia, complex abdominal wall repair, paraesophageal hernia repairs, etc.
The fellow participates in one or more clinical research projects during the year and is expected to present at a national meeting, generally SAGES and/or ASMBS. Multiple ongoing studies are available in which the fellow can participate. Numerous opportunities to write review articles and book chapters are available. The fellow will present in Departmental Grand Rounds and plays an active role in the education of Mount Sinai residents and medical students
