Pioneering Education

Top-ranked and transformative, the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is renowned for its educational excellence. With direct access to the Mount Sinai Health System, our students learn alongside award-winning faculty in an atmosphere of professional and personal growth. Our diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts are engrained at every level, and they are deeply connected to the School’s own mission and history.

We are recruiting students excited about enhancing our understanding of diverse patient communities, as well as those looking to translate scientific discovery into practice. Our curricula champion critical thinking and collaboration: rather than working in silos, our graduate and medical students partner on research projects, pursuing them in laboratories located in the same building as our patient clinics.

Located at the heart of New York City, the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai’s four-block campus borders the neighborhoods of underserved East Harlem and affluent Yorkville. The greater Mount Sinai Health System spans all five boroughs, as well as surrounding areas, placing Icahn Mount Sinai students front and center within a thriving health care nexus.

The Inside Track

Icahn Mount Sinai encompasses an exceptional array of training and research opportunities. Supported by our Centers of Excellence, research institutes, laboratories, partnerships, and affiliated practices, our students enjoy extensive possibilities to develop their own professional passions.

Our faculty are fully accessible, with open lines of communication. Our structure enables us to be nimble, and our enduring connection to wide-ranging patient communities support us as we apply groundbreaking science in the service of society.

We view our students as partners. From launching grassroots movements to establishing key programs, time and again, they prove just how driven they are to advance public health. Our medical students envisioned the East Harlem Health Outreach Partnership, a student-run, free clinic for the underserved. Our graduate students created Mentoring in Neuroscience Discovery at Sinai (MINDS), an initiative that promotes neuroscience education, building enthusiasm among local K-12 students. Together we weave research, education, and service into every aspect of our shared work.

Innovative Learning

For more than half a century, our forward-thinking approach has earned us a reputation for integrity, discovery, altruism, and clinical excellence. In keeping with these values, Icahn Mount Sinai has several programs for you to choose from, including:

  • FlexMed, which allows college sophomores in any major to apply for early acceptance to our MD program.
  • FlexGrad, which enables college undergraduates in any major to apply for early acceptance into our PhD and MD/PhD programs upon completion of our Summer Undergraduate Research Program.
  • Dual degree tracks that combine medical training with study in research and public health.
  • U.S. Military Institutional Partnership, which allows enlisted men and women, as well as officers, provisional acceptance to the Icahn School of Medicine.

Our curricula also includes built-in flextime, which is protected time students devote to self-directed study and discovery, patient-centered experiential learning, community participation, and other essentials for future practitioners and thought leaders. Though our program is rigorous, our students have endless custom choices, and we encourage you to forge your own path forward.

Our Core Values

With commitment and passion, we thread four central themes throughout our curricula to reflect our core values and mission as educators:

  • Research and Discovery
We invite you to engage in intense scholarly exploration, disruptive thinking, and thoughtful risk-taking.
  • Service to Society
We foster science in service of society, responding to needs within our own community that offer tremendous opportunities for our students to contribute, prepare, and reflect.
  • Global Health
We look beyond our own horizons to worldwide human health, creating enduring partnerships, education, research, and patient care at the global level.
  • Frontiers in Science
We integrate real-world science into our classrooms, with an eye on what today’s biomedical research will bring tomorrow.
