Hodes, Horace L., MD, Papers, 1930-1987
Summary
Creator: Hodes, Horace L., MD
Title: Papers
Dates: 1930-1987
Volume: 5 boxes, 8 bound volumes; 6 feet
Preface
These papers were donated to the Archives in 1989 by Horace Hodes' son David. The collection was processed by Nicholas Webb in 2012.
As originally received the collection contained 3 linear feet of patient records from Dr. Hodes' practice and 2 linear feet of patient records and related material accumulated by Dr. Hodes during his service as an expert witness in various court cases. As these files could not easily be opened to public access due to their HIPAA-protected content and were of little enduring research value, they were disposed of during processing.
Dr. Hodes' research and correspondence files contained a significant amount of reprint and manuscript material received from other researchers. Reprints with identifiable publication information were discarded except where they contained annotations; unpublished notes and manuscripts have been kept in their original files. Although these are not systematically described at the item level, researchers should be aware that many files contain them.
Photographs from the collection have been moved into the main Mount Sinai Archives photograph file under Hodes, Horace.
Biographical Note
Horace L. Hodes, MD served for many years as Director of the Pediatrics Department at The Mount Sinai Hospital and as Herbert H. Lehman Professor and Chairman of Pediatrics at Mount Sinai School of Medicine.
Dr. Hodes was born in Philadelphia in 1907. He studied at the University of Pennsylvania, receiving his BA there in 1927 and his MD in 1931. While still in medical school, he and his classmate Milton Rapoport published a groundbreaking paper in the Journal of Biological Chemistrydemonstrating that the main function of Vitamin D was to increase absorption of calcium in the intestine. He interned at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where he served as Chief Resident Physician from 1934 to 1935.
In 1935, Dr. Hodes became Director of Dispensary at the Harriet Lane Home of Johns Hopkins Hospital. The following year he developed a method for neutralizing the infectiousness of viruses using ultraviolet light, which became the basis of commercial rabies and influenza vaccines. While working at the Harriet Lane Home he met Helen Zepp, AB, a bacteriologist who would collaborate with him throughout his career.
In 1938, Dr. Hodes became Pediatrician at Johns Hopkins Hospital as well as Medical Director of Sydenham Hospital in Baltimore. An outbreak of infant diarrhea in 1942 led him to isolate and describe the first known cause of viral diarrhea in human beings, today known as the rotavirus. During the Second World War he served in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Guam, where he demonstrated the mosquito-borne transmission of Japanese B. encephalitis.
Dr. Hodes resumed his positions in Baltimore after the war. In addition to his research and clinical duties, he taught Pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins medical school, Preventive Medicine at the University of Maryland Medical School, and lectured in Epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene.
In 1949 Dr. Hodes was recruited to join The Mount Sinai Hospital as Director of Pediatrics. He invited his collaborator Helen Zepp to join him, and both would remain at Mount Sinai for the remainder of their careers. From 1951 to 1952 Dr. Hodes served as President of the Society for Pediatric Research. He conducted important polio research, demonstrating the presence of distinct polio antibodies in human milk and human serum, and was a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics panel that testified before Congress on the efficacy of the Salk vaccine. In 1953 Hodes established the Jack Martin Polio Respirator Center at Mount Sinai. The first such facility in the City, it cared for adults as well as children and was closed in 1960. In 1962, ten years prior to Dr. Hodes' expected retirement date of 1972, then Chairman of the Board of Trustees Gustave L. Levy personally appealed to him to delay his retirement until 1976 so that he could oversee the continued expansion of the Pediatrics Department.
With the creation of Mount Sinai School of Medicine in the 1960s Dr. Hodes became the first Herbert H. Lehman Professor and Chairman of Pediatrics. In 1971 he was responsible for recruiting Kurt Hirschhorn, MD, an internist at New York University, to establish a Division of Genetics within the Department of Pediatrics. This eventually became Mount Sinai's Department of Genetics and Genomic Sciences.
Dr. Hodes served the American Pediatric Society as President from 1974 to 1975 and was honored in 1975 with a festschrift issue of the Journal of Pediatrics, the second such issue in what was then the journal's 44-year history. He retired from clinical practice in 1976, becoming Director Emeritus of the Department of Pediatrics, but continued an active teaching and research career, doing important work on endotoxin. He died in 1989.
Scope and Content Note
Series 1: Medical Subject Files, 1930-1983 [bulk 1945-1975] - Boxes 1-2
This series contains Dr. Hodes' files on medical topics, the majority of them related to his specialties of pediatric bacteriology and virology. They are organized alphabetically by subject. Files typically contain a mixture of correspondence, manuscripts and research material related to a particular disease, syndrome or chemical compound. Material in this and subsequent series also documents the activities of Helen Zepp, Dr. Hodes' assistant and collaborator. She was co-author of some of the manuscripts and research notes represented in this collection.
The original order of the papers has been followed in the arrangement of this material. Dr. Hodes filed his notes and manuscripts under the relevant subject heading, typically indicating that the material had been used in the preparation of an unspecified publication, such as "Diphtheria Article" or "Immunity Lecture." In cases where it was possible to identify the specific publication, this has been added to the folder description.
Of particular note are the files related to Dr. Hodes' study of infant diarrhea (folders 1-19 through 1-23), which contain research notes from his pioneering work on the rotavirus, and the extensive collection of papers related to polio (2-2 through 2-9), which include the records of his service on the Congressional panel that testified to the efficacy of the Salk Vaccine. Particularly relevant to the history of pediatrics are the handwritten notes taken by Dr. Hodes at a 1971 American Academy of Pediatrics meeting on suggested immunization schedules (1-54.)
As noted in the preface, many subject files contain manuscript material received from other researchers. Major manuscripts by Mount Sinai staff have been identified; these include manuscripts by Hans Popper, MD, PhD (folder 1-47), Louis Wasserman, MD (1-44) and Samuel Karelitz, MD et al. (2-31.) These items demonstrate how specialists in various fields worked together at Mount Sinai towards common medical goals.
A collection of promotional material from manufacturers of bacteriological media (folder 1-73) includes numerous visually striking pamphlets dating from the 1930s and 1940s.
Series 2: General Subject Files, 1947-1987 [bulk 1960-1980] - Boxes 3-5
Dr. Hodes' non-medical subject files contain a wide variety of material, including professional association records, personal correspondence, and material relating to Dr. Hodes' employment at Mount Sinai. They are arranged alphabetically by subject.
Records documenting Dr. Hodes' professional activities include material from his service as President of the American Pediatric Society (folders 3-7 and 3-8), his participation in the American Academy of Pediatrics Task Force on Informed Consent and Medical Ethics (3-4), his work establishing a national amniocentesis registry (3-9 and 3-10), and his service as a consultant to the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (5-4). His activities at Mount Sinai included serving on the Committee on Infection Control (4-34), organizing the Bela Schick Pediatric Society and its annual lectures (3-18 and 3-19), working with the Jack Martin Fund to establish a polio respirator center (4-42), and serving on the executive committee of the Mount Sinai Physicians' Practice Association, which was created to negotiate with HMOs on behalf of Mount Sinai faculty (5-1 through 5-3.) The arc of his career is also documented by an extensive collection of letters of appointment (4-58) and by the records of his investiture as Herbert H. Lehman Professor of Pediatrics in 1969 (4-38.)
The series contains correspondence with numerous major figures in the history of Mount Sinai, such as Hans Popper, MD, PhD (folder 5-16), Martin Steinberg, MD (5-35), Gustave Levy (4-60), and his fellow pediatrician Richard Day, MD (3-45 and 3-46) as well as with distinguished colleagues at other institutions, such as Edwards A. Park, MD (5-11) and Albert Sabin, MD (5-26). There is also correspondence from and related to his brother Robert Hodes, MD, who served as a physiologist at Mount Sinai, and his son David Hodes, MD, who followed in his footsteps as a pediatrician. The records of his recruitment by Mount Sinai in 1949 (3-11) contain letters of congratulation from a number of Mount Sinai physicians, including his Pediatrics Department predecessor Bela Schick, MD. In addition, there are four folders of chronologically organized routine and miscellaneous correspondence dating from 1953 to 1977 (3-38 through 3-41.)
The esteem in which Dr. Hodes was held by his colleagues is demonstrated by files on his awards and honors, such as the Journal of Pediatrics festschrift (folder 4-16) and a Frontiers of Science symposium in his honor (4-18.)
Although Dr. Hodes was involved in the founding of Mount Sinai School of Medicine, the collection contains little material on this subject. Similarly, it does not contain any significant material related to the establishment of a Division of Genetics at Mount Sinai.
Series 3: Research Notebooks, 1948-1958 - 8 bound volumes
This series consists of eight research notebooks belonging to Dr. Hodes and dating primarily from the early 1950s. They document experiments carried out on laboratory animals, primarily mice and rabbits. As these items are in fragile condition, they have been wrapped in acid-free paper.
