Find Funding

Obtaining funding is critical to conducting state-of-the-art research. We provide a variety of resources to help you obtain useful and pertinent information about funding opportunities in and outside of Mount Sinai.

Funding Opportunity Database (SPIN)

Employees at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai have access to a comprehensive online funding opportunity database via InfoEd’s SPIN Application.

Log in using your Mount Sinai Network username and password at eresearch.mssm.edu, select "Find Funding," at the top of the page and begin your search. You can also opt to have opportunities sent directly to your e-mail address.

For detailed instructions, refer to the SPIN Database Getting Started Instructions.

Funding Opportunities Posted to the Research Listserv

Several Mount Sinai offices post upcoming funding opportunities onto the research listserv, including:

  • Committee on Special Awards: Limited Submissions
  • Department of Corporate and Foundation Relations for private independent, not-for-profit awards
  • Office of Research Services for internal pilot and other internal and external awards
  • Grants and Contracts Office for external awards

To receive funding opportunity emails, sign up for the research listserv and select “Grant Submission & Management.”

Federal Sponsored Project Funding Opportunity Databases

SAM.gov and grants.gov are funding opportunity databases maintained by the federal government.

National Institutes of Health (NIH) Grant Opportunities
Familiarize yourself with the new Explore NIH Grant Opportunities tool. Use its NIH-specific filters, sort, and advanced search options to help you quickly identify funding opportunities posted on Grants.gov.

Grants.gov for Grants and Cooperative Agreements
Grants.gov offers a centralized platform for discovering and applying for federal grant and cooperative agreement opportunities across all U.S. government agencies, such as the NIH, the Department of War, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It includes funding for areas such as biomedical research, basic science, translational research, public health, clinical trials, and health-related technology innovation.

SAM.Gov for Contract Opportunities
You can find federal contract opportunities on SAM.gov, which is the official U.S. government site for procurement and acquisition. It lists active solicitations, pre-solicitations, award notices, and sources sought from all federal agencies. You can search by keyword, agency, location, and more.

A contract is a mechanism for procurement of a product or service with specific obligations for both Mount Sinai and the extramural funding agency and recipient. Typically, there are greater performance expectations associated with contracts, including project milestones and detailed deliverables (e.g., reports). The arrangement is usually designed to benefit the extramural funding agency by achieving an expected outcome or product.

Grants and Contracts Office (GCO)

The GCO provides these resources:

  • Funding Opportunity Database (SPIN) via InfoEd’s SPIN Application.

  • GCO Monthly Funding Opportunity Packets
This funding opportunity packet contains comprehensive information for an upcoming month’s deadlines organized by the NIH, National Science Foundation, other federal, and nonfederally sponsored projects

  • Funding opportunities posted to research listserv for upcoming external awards. Sign up for the research listserv and select “Grant Submission & Management”

  • Additional funding opportunities

Committee on Special Awards: Limited Submissions

The Committee on Special Awards: Limited Submissions list current opportunities on its webpage and sends out announcements of special funding opportunities throughout the year on the research listserv. Sign up for the research listserv and select “Grant Submission & Management.”

Corporations and Foundations  [Office of Development]

The Department of Corporate and Foundation Relations, part of the Development Office of the Mount Sinai Health System, establishes and stewards institutional relationships with private independent foundations and corporations. Within the framework of the Mount Sinai strategic plan, we work with you to develop philanthropic support from these donors. We assist you with:

  • Editing and composing letters of inquiry and proposals
  • Assembling necessary supporting materials
  • Interacting with foundations and corporate prospects
  • Arranging for appropriate institutional signatures on proposals and gift agreements
  • Compiling required narrative and financial reports
  • Arranging for site visits and meetings with corporate and foundation donors
  • Nonprofit funding opportunities posted to research listserv. Sign up for the research listserv and select “Grant Submission & Management”

Mount Sinai Innovations Partners (MSIP)

MSIP collaborates with organizations interested in funding innovative pre-clinical and clinical research. Visit the MSIP website for collaborating organizations and to submit an initial proposal for evaluation. MSIP will review and contact you to discuss the possible funding opportunities that fit your initial proposal.

Crowdfunding

Researchers can conduct direct appeals through crowdfunding internet sites by presenting an idea and how much funding you will need to accomplish the project. We offer resources to assist Mount Sinai faculty and staff interested in tapping this funding method.
