Biography
Paul Kirschner was born in New York in 1917. He graduated from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1941 and served an internship and residency at The Mount Sinai Hospital (1941-1944). He received additional surgical training at the Bronx Veterans Administration Hospital. He served on the staff of The Mount Sinai Hospital and then the Mount Sinai School of Medicine for over 50 years. He was named the Chief of the Division of General Thoracic Surgery at Mount Sinai when it was created in 1979. Dr. Kirschner made seminal contributions in the management of lung cancer, myasthenia gravis, and the use of mediastinoscopy in the treatment of thoracic diseases. He was a beloved teacher and also received the Mount Sinai Alumni Jacobi Medallion and the Alexander Richman Award for Humanism in Medicine. Dr. Kirschner died on January 4, 2014.

These files are primarily concerned with Dr. Kirschner’s deep interest in the history of thoracic surgery and the role that the surgeons at The Mount Sinai Hospital played in that history.
