Breast Surgical Oncology Fellowship at Mount Sinai West

The Breast Surgical Oncology Fellowship at Mount Sinai West is a one-year Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO)-accredited program offered to two highly qualified physicians each academic year. The fellowship program is based at the Mount Sinai West Breast Center and The Blavatnik Family Chelsea Medical Center, both outpatient facilities located in Manhattan and part of Mount Sinai’s Tisch Cancer Institute, a National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center. The Tisch Cancer Institute plays a vital role within the Mount Sinai Health System, one of the nation's largest and most comprehensive healthcare networks, and is a crucial component of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

The goal of our fellowship program is to provide specialized training in multidisciplinary treatment of both benign and malignant breast diseases. This is accomplished by rotating through the various disciplines involved in the diagnosis and management of breast disease. In addition to working with the breast surgery teams led by our seven dedicated breast surgeons, fellows rotate with medical oncology, radiation oncology, pathology, breast imaging, plastic surgery, psycho-oncology, physical therapy and rehabilitation, cancer genetics, palliative care, and community service/outreach. We treat more than 1,100 breast cancers each year, ensuring busy caseloads and broad experience. In addition, our patient population is one of the most diverse in the country. Throughout the training period, our fellows also gain knowledge of the administrative fundamentals involved in operating a breast surgery practice and expertise in collaborating with various disciplines.

Conferences and Didactics, and Research

Fellows play an essential role in our weekly multidisciplinary breast conference that is conducted for the entire Mount Sinai Health System. Collaborating with colleagues in breast imaging and pathology, the surgery fellows present cases and literature reviews, and engage in interdisciplinary discussions on patient care. The educational experience also includes monthly lectures from faculty across all disciplines, journal clubs, and continuous one-on-one tutorials.

Throughout the year, the fellows participate in one or two research endeavors with the goal of presenting findings at a national conference and publishing results. Our faculty and dedicated breast research team collaborate with each fellow at the onset of the program to identify and optimize these projects. Previous fellows have showcased their research at prestigious gatherings such as meetings of the Society of Surgical Oncology, the American Society of Breast Surgeons, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the National Consortium of Breast Centers, and at the Miami Breast Cancer Conference.
