Otolaryngology Residency Benefits at Mount Sinai

We provide health coverage for house officers. If you participate in the Mount Sinai Health Plan, you are entitled to professional discounts that apply to deductibles, co-insurance, and standard private room charges with services you receive at The Mount Sinai Hospital. Routine nursery and obstetric care are provided at no cost. Cost sharing is available if you desire family coverage.

In addition, the GME office provides a yearly meal stipend for dining in the hospital cafeterias. In 2024, the annual amount is $1200.

Educational Expenses

Residents are provided an iPad mini to enhance the learning process. A large, comprehensive library of textbooks, journal articles, and atlases are available for downloading through the medical library, as well as through a departmental archive.

Medical Mission Trips

Residents are encouraged to take part in the variety of global surgery initiatives available in the department. Experiences are available in all our specialties, including head and neck surgery, facial plastics, cleft lip and palate surgery, and endoscopic skull base surgery. Residents are able to take part in international outreach trips during their PGY 4 or 5 years.

Academic Meetings

During the PGY-2 and PGY-3 years, the department will reimburse travel expenses to national meetings where residents present an oral or poster presentation. During the PGY-4 and PGY-5 years, the department will reimburse travel expenses to national meetings where residents have oral presentations.

Housing

We make every effort to provide adequate housing for house staff. Resident staff accommodations with subsidized rent are available in a number of apartment buildings within walking distance of the hospitals. Larger apartments are available to residents with families.

Recreation Benefits

Through the Mount Sinai Recreation Office deals and discounts are offered to a multitude of Broadway shows and popular sporting events in the city. Discounts are also offered for many other services and items, including other city attractions, cellphone providers, hotels and rental cars.
