Clinician Educator or Scientist Educator Track

Candidates for appointment or promotion on the Clinician Educator or Scientist Educator Track will be evaluated based on the sum of their academic accomplishments.

Educators are expected to a) demonstrate a scholarly approach to teaching and education practice, and b) contribute to the dissemination of knowledge in a clinical or scientific field, in health professions, or in the practice of biomedical education.

Clinician-educators (CE) on this track have expectations related to clinical care that are detailed below by rank. Scientist-educators (SE) on this track have expectations related to scientific research that are detailed below by rank.

In addition, and in alignment with the Icahn Mount Sinai mission, all members of the faculty and candidates for appointment or promotion at all ranks are expected to show evidence of contributions to and participation in teaching, mentoring, diversity, equity and inclusion efforts, and service and citizenship.

Teaching or the dissemination of knowledge, skills and behaviors takes various forms. It may encompass various methods (small group, large group, lecture, simulation, standardized patient, demonstration etc.) across a variety of venues (classroom, clinical, lab/bench, precepting, online, continuing professional development), and include diverse learners (students, residents, fellows, post-doctoral trainees, peers, allied health professionals, community members [i.e. patients, family, community organization staff etc.]).

Mentoring includes professional, working alliances and experiences in which individuals work together over time to support the personal and professional growth, development, and success of the relational partners through the provision of career and psychosocial support (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. 2019. Diversity, equity and inclusion efforts include engagement in and leadership of programs, strategies, committees or experiences that foster and advance a diverse, equitable and inclusive environment in science and medicine at the school, department, hospital, health system, community, and/or professional organization level. Efforts that are innovative, enhancing, integrative and coordinated in education, clinical practice, and/or research are valued as a driver of institutional excellence.

Service and Citizenship are broadly defined as acts of supporting the school and health system, our community and broader society, the academic community, and science and medicine. This includes activities that further the mission and goals of the school, department, hospital, health system, community, or national professional organization. Participation in or leadership of school and/or health system committees, awards or recognition for service and citizenship, and development of programs or initiatives that support the mission and goals described above are considered evidence of a candidate’s commitment to and effectiveness in this area.

Eligibility: Faculty in all departments, including basic science departments, are eligible for appointment on this track.

1. Assistant Professor

Appointment, reappointment and promotion to the rank of Assistant Professor on the Clinician Educator or Scientist Educator Track may be extended to individuals who take a scholarly approach to their role as educators with tangible, material contributions to the dissemination of knowledge. Examples are provided in the Educational Addendum.

Clinical Care (for CE candidates on this track): Candidates are expected to show superior competence in medical practice and be perceived by other physicians in the institution and community as a source of excellent care for patients.

Scientific research (for SE candidates on this track): Candidates are expected to demonstrate competence in research as an early-stage scientist with local impact through prior and/or ongoing fellowship or research grant support, evidence of engagement and scholarship at the local level, and co-authorship on scientific publications and other forms of dissemination.

Appointment and Term – Appointment to this position is at the discretion of the Department Chair. The term of appointment is one year.

Reappointment and Non-Reappointment – In the absence of an employment contract, the Chair will provide notice of reappointment or non-reappointment.

Reappointment may be for one year, at the discretion of the Chair. There is no limit on the number of reappointments permitted.

If a decision to reappoint a faculty member is made during a term extension as described in the section on notices of non-reappointment, the reappointment notice must be in writing from the Chair. The reappointment will commence retroactive to the first day following completion of the original term of appointment.

In the event of non-reappointment, the Chair will provide written notice.

Promotion – The Chair may, at any time, recommend promotion to the rank of Associate Professor.

2. Associate Professor

Appointment, reappointment and promotion to the rank of Associate Professor on the Clinician Educator or Scientist Educator Track may be extended to individuals who show clear evidence of taking a scholarly approach to their teaching and education practice, and have made excellent contributions to the dissemination of knowledge. These individuals are widely recognized at the regional level for their accomplishments. Examples are provided in the Educational Addendum.

Clinical Care (for CE candidates on this track): The candidate must be an excellent clinician. A reputation both institutionally and regionally as a source of excellent care may be demonstrated by awards; success caring for other physicians' patients; or general reputation on clinical subjects. An increasing volume of cases should reflect the candidate's expanding referral patterns.

Scientific research (for SE candidates on this track): Candidates are expected to demonstrate competence in research as a scientist with regional impact through prior and/or ongoing fellowship, training grant or research grant support, evidence of engagement and scholarship at the regional level, and first or senior authorship on scientific publications and other forms of dissemination.

Appointment and Term – Appointment and promotion to the rank of Associate Professor is upon recommendation by the Department Chair, with subsequent approval by the Committee on Appointments, Promotions and Tenure. The length of the term of appointment can be one, two, three, four or five years.

Reappointment and Non-Reappointment – In the absence of an employment contract, the Chair will provide notice of reappointment or non-reappointment.

Reappointment at this rank in this track can be for a term of one, two, three, four or five years in length. Reappointment for a term of more than one year requires review and approval by the Office of the Dean. There is no limit on the number of reappointments permitted.

If a decision to reappoint a faculty member is made during a term extension as described in the section on notices of non-reappointment, the reappointment notice must be in writing from the Chair. The reappointment will commence retroactive to the first day following completion of the original term of appointment.

In the event of non-reappointment, the Chair will provide written notice.

Tenure – Under exceptional circumstances, an Associate Professor in the Clinician Educator or Scientist Educator Track may be considered for tenure. Candidates for tenure must exceed the requirements for appointment or promotion to the rank of Associate Professor, must demonstrate sustained, superior productivity and leadership, excellence in the dissemination of knowledge, and a high likelihood of continued success.  

The recommendation of exceptionally qualified faculty for tenure at this rank may be made at any time by the Chair, and requires approval by the Committee on Appointments, Promotions and Tenure.

Promotion – The Chair may, at any time, recommend exceptionally qualified faculty for promotion to the rank of Professor in the Clinician Educator or Scientist Educator Track.

3. Professor

Appointment, reappointment and promotion to the rank of Professor on the Clinician Educator or Scientist Educator Track may be extended to individuals who show sustained evidence of a scholarly approach to teaching and education practice, and outstanding contributions to the dissemination of knowledge. These individuals are widely recognized at the national and/or international level for their accomplishments. Examples are provided in the Educational Addendum.

Clinical Care (for CE candidates on this track): Candidates may be widely perceived as outstanding clinicians and actively sought after at an institutional, regional, and national level for their clinical expertise. An increasing volume of cases should reflect the candidate's expanding referral patterns.

Scientific research (for SE candidates on this track): Candidates are expected to demonstrate excellence in research as a scientist with national impact through prior and/or ongoing fellowship, training grant or research grant support, evidence of engagement and scholarship at the national/international level, and senior authorship of scientific publications and other forms of dissemination.

Appointment and Term – Appointment and promotion to the rank of Professor are upon recommendation by the Department Chair with subsequent approval by the Committee on Appointments, Promotions and Tenure. The term of appointment can be one, two, three, four or five years.

Reappointment and Non-Reappointment – In the absence of an employment contract, the Chair will provide notice of reappointment or non-reappointment.

Reappointment at this rank can be for one, two, three, four or five years. Reappointment to a term longer than one year requires review and approval by the Office of the Dean. There is no limit on the number of reappointments permitted.

If a decision to reappoint a faculty member is made during a term extension as described in the section on notices of non-reappointment, the reappointment notice must be in writing from the Chair. Reappointment will commence retroactive to the first day following completion of the original term of appointment.

In the event of non-reappointment, the Chair will provide written notice. The timing of notices of non-reappointment to the full-time faculty is determined by the length of the term of appointment.

Tenure – A candidate may be considered for tenure at the time of appointment or promotion to Professor, or at any time during his/her term of appointment at this rank. Candidates for tenure must exceed the requirements for appointment or promotion to the rank of professor and must have a record of sustained accomplishment. They must further demonstrate continued superior productivity and leadership, as well as excellence in the dissemination of knowledge.
